I don't actually have dates before anything than a few years back, I just assumed they have the same time count as Unix.
But it's an actual problem with historical data. And DNA scientists had the problem of DNA description strings (?) getting interpreted as dates but this has been solved now.

            >It's that shit and that shit alone that is the reason why I will never buy office ever again.
Same. I have Office 2019 on a laptop that hardly sees any use.

            She's clearly never used VBA.
Then again, I've been using librecalc and BASIC is ... oh frick it is way worse than I could imagine.

Luckily, python exists and I think you can just use that shit on libre. Don't think it was there for excel 2016.

            >Then again, I've been using librecalc and BASIC is ... oh frick it is way worse than I could imagine.
LO BASIC isn't as bad as VBA is it?

            Anonymous

I've used whatever basic libre used. I just went "NOPE". This was just recently. VBA I used at a firm like 5-6 yrs ago and it probably fricked me in the end for I was naive on it's capabilities or code in general.

This is, btw, coming from a dude trying to dabble with assembly nowadays.
VBA was my first code experience and I wanted to break every computer after it.
            ASM is somehow nice.

I just don't get it. How is BASIC and VBA so painful?
No other languages are nearly as painful for me.
Assembly is hard and your not likely to get results. But at least you understand what's going on. With BASIC and VBA it always feels like "computer just said no" and that's it.

Python, Java, Javascript, C and C++ did not have nearly as big of an issue for me.
            Neither did machine code.
            I don't even.
Something is very wrong with the design of BASIC and VBA.

        this tbqh
Most of my job consisted of sending out productivity reports pulled from a website because the managers are too lazy to go to the website. It was horrible and tedious and took ages of clicking and copying and pasting.
I made an unholy monstrosity of VBA (back when I didn't know how to code) that did all the reports automatically and then put that b***h in Windows Task Scheduler thereby automating 99% of my job.
The other 1% of the job is critical shit that requires someone on site 24/7 in case something actually breaks so they couldn't actually lay us off or anything, so thanks to VBA I get paid to do next to nothing.

        Thanks, VBA!

My worst data engineering pipeline was connecting Looker to Salesforce using Google Sheets (the poor man's equivalent to excel) as a "staging database", because the startup was so cheapstake they didn't want to pay for the Salesforce-BigQuery connector. Just imagine how shitty it was to maintain, running fricking formulas to transform the data and grab the resulting cells for ingestion.
Btw I was laid off 6 months later and the same luck happened to the rest of the team in less than a year.

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure she probably considers anyone concatenating the text contents of three cells together as "coding."
That being said, I did not expect to hear this from her, in virtually conceivable context.
Wait, is Michaelsoft actually paying Hollywood celebs to shill their products?
I think they're shitting their pants now that everyone realizes MS Office is just a charade and can be replaced with LibreOffice 99% which is cost free, free of Microshart cancer and freely allows you to manage your own data instead of shoving it into the cloud, so Bill Gates can see your noodz (that you happen to embed in your Excels, for whatever reasons).

But there's probably also security issues.

Have you ever used a spreadsheet with about 15 sheets all with 10s of thousands of rows?
        It is a nightmare.

I worked for a firm involved a case that dealt with a utilities corporation once.
They had their system on a fricking excel spreadsheet. I kid you not.
And it was a nightmare to just print a single page from or just to filter information from.

So 2GB is rather generous for that shitfest of a program. It's so bloated and slow.

Used to use Excel all the time for smaller analytics tasks. Our main DB held huge amounts of data but we only ever really needed to handle specific slices so we'd query the DB and export to CSV, then import into Excel and do what we needed. Pivot tables pulled most of the weight.

VBA to write custom software. Way worse than JS in google sheets but at least you can easy interact with files locally/on the network.
No idea what Basic or whatever it's called in LibreOffice calc can do, I never heard of anyone using it.

      Anonymous

You can use PowerApps to interact with .xlsx these days and run a kind-of database from them with a simple http or Teams frontend. It's disgusting and a total hack and leaks your data all over Dataverse/Teams/AD but office slags just cannot into anything else.

Using Excel as a simple spreadsheet is also painfully slow, laggy and error-prone these days. O365 and endless integration with other MS services has ruined it. If all you need is a simple local spreadsheet, you really are better off using something else.

I think excel for data entry is okay (especially if using data validation features and locking the sheets to prevent idiots from fricking anything up).

But for any serious “data science” work, the data should be extracted, processed , and stored into a real database. I used to be a codelet who wrote extremely complicated excel functions (with like 6 levels of nested IF statements) that were borderline impossible to debug afterwards, and now I cringe knowing that I could do all that (and much more) with a few simple lines of Python.

NTA but I’ll bite. Everything in the no-code MS Power suite is stupid easy to use until you need to do something more complicated than dragging and dropping in the gui. Once you need to code something the docs are terrible and the form answers are garbage, usually just links to content creator’s Youtubes that don’t solve your problem.

Doing all your data processing in Python or Excel and then plugging in the results to BI for pretty graphs is chill. Trying to use the data model feature is a nightmare for anything more complicated than the gui can handle
