How come there isn't a tablet-pc that has:
- good pen support
- good battery life
- usable OS
iPad is the closest contender, but the OS is dumbed down to extreme points it is unusable as desktop. The closest thing that makes it usable is a-shell, but even then, you can just run wasm binaries.

Isn't that exactly what the Microsoft Surface is?
Galaxy Tabs are pretty good.
Android could be better, but it's usable.
For note taking? Sure.
For drawing? Absolutely not. No.
Need to try a galaxy tab sometime. The fact of termux being totally native is also cool too (I can try to do local dev stuff).
I prefer spending more money on something reliable than getting a half assed product.
I've had the S7+ since 2020, and it's been great.
The drawing/painting software ecosystem on android leaves some to be desired, but the pen accuracy is top notch, cause it's tech they licensed from Wacom, and the software situation is improving over time.
Personally I mostly use Artflow, cause it light and simple and does what I need. If you're looking for more blending options and more complicated brushes or other bells and whistles, Krita or Infinite Painter is the best you'll get for free, or Clip Studio Paint is a subscription.
I wish Clip Studio Paint were a one time purchase on Android. It'd be so easy to recommend if it weren't a subscription. It's not that expensive as a subscription, but still.
Have you ever geeked around with termux? Would like to know how is the experience on it too (I mostly just use the terminal on my laptop).
I haven't really. Sorry.
Thanks anyway! I'll see if I manage to try it out somehow.
bc a tablet is less mobile than a phone
and less powerful than a proper laptop, but has equal mobility and a similar format. and a keyboard of course.
there just isnt a market for these things.
Bro, the newest iPads most likely have a processor better than your current laptop.
The pen experience is a bit lacking, and not good battery life.
Forgot to mention that an external keyboard for a tablet will be everytime superior that the one that comes with the keyboard (or at least will provide better ergonomics).
>the newest iPads most likely have a processor better than your current laptop.
the os is that shit that you'll never be able to tell. safari tabs are repeatedly killed to keep memory consumption down.
If you have read my initial post, I said the reason iPads don't make into the list is its unusable OS.
they most definitely have a more powerful processor than my current laptop bc im shitposting from a pos currybook from 2008.
(not a poorgay, just had to airgap my shit)
but thats missing the point.
what good of a fat processor if your interface with it is suck? and its still gonna be way slower than a desktop, by virtue of thermal envelope.
desktops which graphics pros usually use exactly bc of performance, but also better interfacing and expansion capabilities.
however, it might make sense to add some usb ports to the tablet, and give it a proper os.
heck, i want that with smartphones, actually.
but again
there just isnt a market for that.
99.9% of smartphone users wouldnt know what to do with these features, and only get pissed that the looks of their phone/tablet is ruined now that its 2.5mm thicker
Yeah
The M3 chip in the upcoming iPad Pro has the same single core speed as the 14900K for a tenth of the power
Quite literally unbelievable.
Mind you, that's base M3, not even Pro or Max.
I'm honestly a bit miffed the tablet/laptop dock combo didn't take off better. ASUS had a good Idea with their early Transformer pads (besides the fact the early ones were dogshit performance wise). I used to shitpost with mine pretty frequently.
>less powerful than a proper laptop
the fricked up part is with how powerful phones are now there's not much reason aside from shitty coding practices that phones shouldn't be able to do most tasks a laptop from 10years ago could.
>aside from shitty coding practices
its all on purpose.
without shitty coding practices people would use their phones for years without changing them.
and without constant evolution, phone manufacturers wouldnt have new products to sell to fix that problem of slowness they create themselves
>tl;dr
exactly.
its the same players with the sameMO everywhere:
create a problem for which you have a solution.
one that will be very profitable to you
Check CHUWI UBook. It probably hasn't a good pen neither good battery life, but at least it is cheap.
Because there isn't enough of a market for that.
Most people already have a laptop, all they really want is a purpose-built tablet with an OS that is designed to be as seamless and frictionless as possible.
Obviously if would be amazing if iPad also had MacOS mode or something, but Apple will never do it because it would decrease Mac sales.
Other tablet makers just don't have the vertical integration or dev support to make truly excellent tablets like Apple does.
you would be completely fine with an ipad or galaxy but people like you are infinitely picky and you don't like anything
My OnePlus Pad works fine. You can get a gayass pen for it.
because we haven't outlawed proprietary software yet
