The pi and ARM SBCs in general are and remain toys. Do you like playing with toys? Then sure.
But don't expect them to be useful.

It's not really as bad as it sounds as long as you don't try to build chromium. Then you end up waiting...

Well, I'm also using LTO, -Ofast, loop vectorization and flipped pgo on, so it could probably be faster if you threw that all out and just used -O1 or -O2 at some runtime impact to performance. Might also be worth PGO'ing clang.

Guy I know studying CS does most of his programming classwork on an old tablet ssh'd into a PI because it was 1/3rd the cost of a decent used laptop.
So I guess it can have some value

No, it's frankly garbage. Buy a used mid tier laptop (muh thinkpad) from few years ago, maybe a broken one with busted screen, add ram in needed, add ssd and install linux on it

I dont need a huge laptop taking up space. What I need is a SBC pi that can plug into a spare monitor and run code that I program from visual GDB or visual studio code

If your problem is Windows and macOS doing shady shit, just install Linux. Which is likely what you'd be using on the Pi anyway.

If you’re considering a Raspberry Pi 5, it’s a great option for those who want control over their computing experience, with the ability to manage updates and software. It’s known for improved performance, versatility in projects, and cost-effectiveness. The Raspberry Pi 5 also offers more privacy, as you can opt for open-source software, steering clear of proprietary systems with forced updates. While it may not replace a traditional computer for every user, it’s an excellent choice for flexibility and customization in a compact and affordable package.

Well you own the software dont you? Since its linux? You shouldnt have to upgrade past a certain point if you dont want.

Every PC that I build is going to cost way more than a Raspberry Pi and it will take up a shitload of space and I'll have to do extensive construction. Are you alright?

Pi 5 really shows how out to lunch the Pi foundation really is. It's too powerful for a microcontroller platform, but very weak for a desktop experience. Plus you have to buy most things that come with a NIB PC aftermarket like fan, heatsink, storage, case, power supply, or the shitty micro HDMI cables separately.

Then don't and get yourself something actually worth having like a BeagleV Ahead or Fire. Actually do something like working with a completely new platform that has documentation and code sources out there but virtually no one has actually blazed a path for you. Do FPGA development and flash a video card onto it, ADC/DAC/DSP, more RISC-V cores, NPU, TPU, etc etc. onto it.

He's right, y'know. You can't see any difference past 1080p. Claiming you can makes you no better than audiophools that claim they can "hear the difference" past 16bit/44.1kHz.

I have a 31" 4k monitor that's pretty sweet. I can have a lot of stuff visible at the same time. It's not really about the sharpness of the picture (although it is sharp).

That there's a ~3MB chunk of mystery meat code that starts up the pi.
There's unironically less unknown code on rockchip platforms. The only "unknown" code is the 32KB bootrom which has been dumped and disassembled.
