I fear for americas future. I am not even saying one has to know basic calculus (though anyone who doesn't is a brainlet) but the most basic arithmetic is essential, but this is nothing really, these days american highschool students struggle to read

YouTube is literal bottom of the barrel in terms of intellect. The average YouTube commenter is between 14 and 16

Wrong. It's what morons do when they hope that being snarky and aggressively mocking someone will distract everyone else from their own stupidity.
how do you get 14?
8+2=10
10+4=14
Just do the math?
8÷2(2+2) = 8+2(2+2) = 8+2*2+2 = 8+4+2 = 14
>8÷2(2+2) = 8+2(2+2)
What the frick are you trying to do there?
1
8/8
8 / (4 + 4)
8 / 2(2 + 2)
Show which step is incorrect or shut up.
>8/(4+4)
That was a common factor you dumb frick
Its
8 / 4 + 4
2+4
6
16
4*4
8/4*4
8/4*(2+2)
The division. Not in your case, but in that image. How do you know which case is the image supposed to be:
8
--- * (2+2)
2
or
8
-----
2*(2+2)
Answer is different based on case.
You got 8/(2(2+2)) which isn’t equal to the original expression
[eqn] frac{8}{4}(2+2) = frac{8}{4}4 = frac{8}{16} = 0.5[/eqn]
Brainet
Why 8/4?
t. Mathlet
[math]dfrac{8}{2*dfrac{2}{2}}[/math]
99% of people with down's syndrome can't solve this...
wtf what did i do wrong. i hate this stupid website
Brainlet
Everyone taking this problem seriously is just as stupid as the people they are making fun of. It is a deliberately bad problem with ambiguous interpretation.
>It is a deliberately bad problem with ambiguous interpretation.
^^^This.
Stop missing the point and saying moronic shit like "lost all faith in this generation" / "it's obviously X if you just use [my preferred arbitrary order of operation rules]."
If you're halfway non-moronic you'll catch on that these are always notation ambiguity exploit baits and insisting your one of the two conflicting parse options is right is the stupidest response you can have.
>simple math problem
not a math problem. syntax error.
It's incredible how stupid the average person is. Yet they make more money than me and seem to be much happier.
That's just the average person, remember that half the population is dumber than them
You just gotta get off your ass and do shit
I think the major issue is the division symbol. Nowhere have I seen it in academia, you either multiply 8 by 1/2 or 2^(-1) which is the same. Once given the symbol, you can only assume 2(2+2) is one term and thus the outcome is 1.
QED
Someone forgot brackets first.
Why are people ITT acting like there isn't an order of operations that leads to an objectively correct answer?
I'm a smol brain moron so why wouldn't BODMAS apply?
(2+2) = 4
8/2 = 4
4*4 = 16
>OoO
>objective
It is not objective whether implicit multiplication takes precedence over division or vice versa. Anyone interpreting 1/2pi as pi/2 is a brainlet, for example. Other situations are more ambiguous. The only objectively correct solution here is to mark the student's work as incorrect.
It's 16 either way. The ambiguity is from whether parentheses adjacent operations take precedence or not. But in both cases it's (8 / 2) * (2 + 2) = 8 / (2/ (2 + 2)) = 16. Get this brainlet shit out of here.
weak bait
It's one bros. That's the answer following basic math rules. Anyone that says otherwise has moronic math rules that just complocate things for autistic reason, come on.
>OP is a dumb homosexual complaining about a fake math "controversy" for literal teenagers on YouTube that nobody cares about and using it as an excuse to cry about muh society and muh normies
Yes, I'm the contrarian.
1 is the only correct answer.
it is 16 you are all morons. It is (8/2)x(2+2) which equals 4x4=16
8/2 * (2+2) = fraction(8,2) * (4) = 4 * 4 = 16
16, any other answer is wrong.
8 divided by 2(2+2)
the answer is Black person
>heh I'm so smart for being able to figure out this basic problem
When did this board become flooded with midwits?
Fact: Knowing how to solve this problem is useless information to 99% of people, hence why they don't retain it. Most people who can't solve it are probably skilled at something else. Were you taught French and Spanish in school? Can you remember basic verb conjugation? No you fricking can't. And they can't remember this either. Because it's useless.
You are not smart.
Answer is 1
>answer is 1
>smuggie.jpg
This is some meta-shitposting.
[math]
frac{8}{2}(2 + 2) = left(frac{8}{2}right)(4) = (4)(4) = 18
[math]
[math]
frac{8}{2}(2 + 2) = left(frac{8}{2}right)(4) = (4)(4) = 8
[/math]
[math]
frac{8}{2}(2 + 2) = frac{2^3}{2^1}(2^2) = 2^{3 + 2 - 1}
[math]
[math]
frac{8}{2}(2 + 2) = frac{2^3}{2^1}(2^2) = 2^{3 + 2 - 1} = 2^{2^2}
[/math]
The answer is 1 you fricking moron. Also soijak represents you.
brackets first
indices
divide
>nobody posted it
Guess it's my turn
Not only is this a funny read, it is also correct and explains the 'division symbol mystery' I mentioned in
Basically, /thread
the answer is 9 though moron, if you have a division before a multiplication you do the division first. it is 6 divided by 3 times 3 which is 9
*6 divided by 2 times 3 which is 9
I haven't used the division symbol in 15 years. Parentheses exist for a reason. When was the last time you had done so?
I don't care about your homosexual soi mutt acronyms, parentheses trivialize the problem while fractions eliminate it.
am I the only person in this thread that knows what the order of operations is? jfc
PEMDAS
Add and subtract and multiply and divide depend on which operation comes first from left to right
>am I the only person in this thread that knows what the order of operations is?
No, you're the most common midwit poster this bait was designed for who's too low IQ to realize this is notation trolling and who's too low IQ to identify the specific aspect of notation that's ambiguous depending on which order of operation scheme you use.
Hint: Go look up what implied multiplication by juxtaposition is and how it isn't always treated like explicit multiplication. Or what solidus division is.
>reeeeeeeeee
moronic frick
K, continue falling for these notation baitposts forever like the midwit you are.
the number next to the bracket makes it an indices tard
PLEASE EAT MY DICK AND SHIT
PEMDAS
>idiots giving "÷" magical powers it doesn't have
Correct answer is 16
8÷2(2+2)
8/2*(2+2)
8/2*4
4*4
16
Ambiguity isn't a "power" you stupid shit.
Anyway, picking one ordering rule over another is the stupidest thing you can do here and exactly what the bullshit problem was designed to bait you into doing.
A smart answer would be identifying the notation ambiguity that results in a consistent split of midwits arguing with each other about their preferred rule.
>picking one ordering rule over another
there is only one
Wrong, which is exactly the problem. Implied multiplication by juxtaposition and division by solidus operator are not consistently defined behaviors all publications and caluclation systems use the same ordering rulen for.
That's why these threads continue to work at baiting contradictory replies from anons insisting their own preferred ruleset is the one true ruleset. And why you can pull out two different calculators or calculating programs and get the two different answers depending on which ruleset it was programmed to use.
there is only one, moron
>If I pretend my arbitrary priority assign scheme of choice is the only one then there's no more ambiguity
Great strategy, you dip.
>i have no argument
cope
Argument's been explained to you fifty times already, brainlet.

4 = 0
I'm going to post this here because there are no question threads on this board and I've failed to be able to look it up. I can't quite remember the details, so I might be wrong on some things.
I think there's some sort of mathematical function f(x), or a series of functions, that returns whole numbers or at least rational numbers without many decimal places, but this is true only up to something like x=12 or x=14, at which point the function returns a number with a huge number of decimals. When the code to do the calculations was first written and they saw this result, they initally thought it was a mistake and tried to figure out how to fix the bug, but eventually realised that it was actually real. I think it might have been a series, and it contained trigonometric functions like sin. I think the series also might have been named after someone. I originally thought it might be Wilkinson's polynomial, but that's a different thing.
Does anyone recognise this story?
Anon on /misc/ found it. It was the Borwein integral.
if you forget PEMDAS you can always use the fact that if you integrate and then differentiate a number its the same number
little trick from calculus, answer is 1/2 🙂
if it was 8 / 2 * (2+2) then it would be 16
when you write it like that, it's 1
the division is noted with a symbol but the multiplication is not. if it was written as "8 / 2x where x=(2+2)" there would be no debate but for some reason actual numbers makes people dumb
>>when you write it like that, it's 1
>source: my ass
a = 8 / 2x
x = 4+4
what's the answer homosexual
8/2x
8/2(4+4)
8/2*(4+4)
8/2*8
4*8
32
the answer isn't an integer, it's a vector... they all are.
>arguing about operator precedence
moron tier. Kys.
2+2 = 4
8/2 = 4
4 * 4 = 16
Kys
you have to distribute first
[math]
8 div 2(2 + 2) = ?\
8 div 4 + 4 = ?\
2 + 4 = ?\
2 + 4 = 6 square
