So has he just stopped even trying to write Winds or what?

So has he just stopped even trying to write Winds or what? 13 years is far far more than enough time to sort out any plot issues he could have run into. Has he lost his passion for writing?

    >Has he lost his passion for writing?
This is the most likely answer. Based off what he's said in previous years, its safe to assume he didn't even start writing Winds until mostly after the show ended. Leading up to 2020, he said that he had a part of it done, but its safe to assume most of that was Dance leftovers. While 2020 was his most productive year for it by far (writing about 400 pages), he seems to have not made any significant progress since.

I think its a mix of distractions and loss of passion for the writing. He seems to be bogged down by Winds anytime it is brought up and only wrote things like Fire and Blood to get his publisher off his back. It's a shame, but when he said "westeros will die with me", I truly believe he is telling the truth.

    >In December 2022, Martin revealed he had completed 1,100 to 1,200 pages with only 400 or 500 left
Estimated release date is between 2026 and 2030.

The fatass wrote 400 pages in 2020 during Covid. I don’t see why he doesn’t just do the same for a year and force himself to work at it till he’s done. The fanbase has given up on a Dream of Spring they’ll be happy with Winds

COVID had that effect on a lot of people, gave them a burst of motivation or energy
the problem with GRRM is threefold:
        1. he's rich and never needs to work a day again in his life
        2. everyone experience the ending already. even if the book differs greatly, you'll never put the toothpaste back in the tube
        3. people absolutely hated the ending and soured on the series altogether
so that basically eliminates every single possible motivation an author could have to write.
it'll take something like COVID 2.0 or the terminal illness of his wife to provide the motivation necessary to finish it

dang and they just sat on it waiting for the exact right time when sentiment on the IP was rock bottom and other epic fantasies have stolen much of the spotlight from ASOIAF?

And at the end of 2023, he said the page count was 1,100. So he literally did very little the whole year. It's getting embarrassing at this point. I want him to be honest about why it is taking so long instead of just vague allusions that he is working on it. He hasn't mentioned TWOW in his blog for nearly 6 months now.

It's extremely likely that he's either 1. actually done and in the process of running the manuscript through editors and figuring out page count or 2. not actually done but close enough that his publishers are already working on it on their end.
This isn't cope but realistic analysis of his interviews and Not a Blog statements. It has been 13 years, after all, if he had given up on it he would have owned up to it at least.

      >if he had given up on it he would have owned up to it at least.
No he wouldnt. GRRM is the kid who shows up on presentation day asking for one more day to prepare, and then doesnt show up the next day, or the day after that.

He brags about progress whenever he gets work done, and he hasn't mentioned Winds since his last statement about how he got 0 pages done in the last year.

We keep having these threads and the simple answer that is given is he will bot finish it. Even if he does finish it, he will not finish his final book. His Magnum Opus is not all anymore.

      >he will bot finish it.
I know this was a typo, but it made me consider him eventually just breaking down and using AI to finish what he already has as a real possibility.

His sloth has inspired me to write my own autistic ensemble cast worldbuilding fantasy epic. I am an amateur with no experience or contacts in publishing and I know in my heart of hearts, my first volume will hit the shelves before Wind. On that day, I shall leave a piss-soaked copy of my manuscript on his grave.

and it will still be better than what he wrote

His writing style involves having no hard outlines for what will end up happening. He has a general idea where he's going then he just writes whatever he feels like. This resulted in cool things like Jaime Lannister going from a straight up villain to trying to redeem himself once he lost his hand. This also has resulted in massive bloat to the plot since GRRM is literally writing whatever he feels like, now there is no more room to frick around, the story is horribly complex, and he needs to get this shit moving in a direction that will enable him to tie a bow on this thing and call it done.

He has dozens of plot threads going every which way to the point that mentally juggling them and writing a coherent story with no contradictions out of them is very difficult.

The funny thing is, DNF was in development for 11 years, which isn't even all that wild by modern standards.
Some kind of follow up to HL2E2 has been in supposed active development since 2007. GTA games now only show up on a ten yearly basis. It looks like Elder Scrolls is heading that way too.

He already finished it, he just wants to publish them posthumously so he avoids criticism and achieves the apotheosis of publishing his greatest work posthumously as Tolkien.
