to give a serious answer, there is no reason. That's kind of the point, there is no reason, the protagonist doesn't care about anything, because it's all absurd.
maybe this is wrong, haven't read it in a long time
The protagonist is an npc that just drifts through life and is a slave to circumstance. He got hot so the arab got shot. The real question is why did he write the letter? A little social pressure was all it took for him to condone and participate in a guy plotting and deceiving for an opportunity to beat his ex. Absolutely psychotic behavior, "but hey, it's not my fault so I don't care." Aberrant behavior aside, the stranger isn't really so strange. Make's you wonder how many other people there are just like him, but in better circumstances.
>npc
No, the man is a god. He's an enlightened being who lives in the present moment at all times, is entirely un-neurotic and never worries about anything.
He has good work that he does so well, he's offered a promotion he doesn't even want or need. He makes friends without even trying, he was about to marry without even trying.
Even when he's about to be hanged because Society has essentially deemed him too great a man to suffer, he simply meditates on existence until he concludes that he is at all times complete and whether he's hanged or not doesn't matter because he partook in the beauty of life as fully as he could. And he does all this without ever submitting one inch to the lie of religion.
The reason doesn't matter, the point Camus was trying to make is that society would sentence to death someone for being a robot autist who doesn't follow normal social conventions (i.e. crying at your mother's funeral.)
Personally I think he shot him because of his grief for his mother which he himself didn't acknowledge. The day he had to do the funeral march was really hot with the sun beating in his head. He didn't really register that his mom died, as shown by the opening passage of "Maman died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know".
A couple of days later he finds himself on the beach with the sun beating in his head again, a gun in his hand and a couple of men yelling really loudly back and forth, so he has a lapse of judgement and just shoots.
Because the guy had been stalking his friend who got cut from the resulting fight. He's trying to have a nice day at the beach with his girlfriend and friends and these fricking Arabs are out for blood.
He SAYS he doesn't know why he did it, but he's lying to the reader.
The Sun is God and its light all His creation. It bothers the mc and he tries to get back on God by hurting his most precious creation, man.
That's what I tell people and they are all "wow your philosophy degree was really worth it, huh?"
One time my best friend of 4 years was jumping up and down and laughing and it was hot and the sun was in my face and I kicked him in his groin
I still do not understand why I did it but it caused a lot of trouble for me and I lost my best friend
what schocked me the most about this novel was the fact that apparantely, even back int eh "good old days", you could be actually sentenced to death in france for killing an ARAB.
It was surprising to me that a lawyer was allowed to soliloquize to the jury in the middle of cross-examination, as if he was giving closing argument.
Shooting the Arab was the only wrong thing Mersault ever did, and he still would've gotten off if he hadn't delivered a coup de grace. Actually the absurd thing is he still would've gotten off, had he shown more grief at his mother's funeral and expressed religious contrition. The latter still routinely gets criminals lighter sentences every day.

He was possessed by the spirit of Sir Duncan Crumb (His Lordship)
because the sun was making his head pound, it's literally in the book...
moron
read the book
we dont know why he killed him, we only know he went there to kill him and everything happened exactly as he wanted it to happen
probably because he was a fricking violent piece of shit arab and most likely deserved to die
Id like to go back in time and throw a basketball at Camus head repeatedly. Dumb french b***h.

the belief in the now is itself a theology. he may think himself to be the god, but he thinks a god nonetheless.
I'm not sure if you went to Bible school, or if you study philosophy or what, but I have bad news: all that time was wasted on you.
I really hate novels trying to push philosophical points
He got slashed on the face with a knife. Keep it up though IQfy. Why bothering trying to read a 70 page novella?
It was the style at the time.

D minus. I didn't fail you only because you appear to have at least read the spark notes.
Why shouldn’t he? Same reason Smeldyakoff kills fyodor Pavlovich

Idk but that’s one of the most forgettable books I’ve ever read
1. Why the frick wouldn't he kill the arab
2. If you were smart, you'd be doing the same
Because he was a Black person
why didn't he just say the arab was coming threating me? it's a white guy vs a brown guy he can't lose
Because he shot him once, guy went down, then put a couple more in him. Read a book you idiot Black person.
a careful reading suggests his mother told him to
The sun
it was a different time back when
The Sun is God and its light all His creation. It bothers the mc and he tries to get back on God by hurting his most precious creation, man.
That's what I tell people and they are all "wow your philosophy degree was really worth it, huh?"
it was hot and he was unsure what his ops were gonna do, better be safe than sorry
because it was hot and because of the sun and he didnt want to deal with the Arab's bullshit. holy shit did you not read the book are you moronic
One time my best friend of 4 years was jumping up and down and laughing and it was hot and the sun was in my face and I kicked him in his groin
I still do not understand why I did it but it caused a lot of trouble for me and I lost my best friend
How hard did you kick him in the balls that it ended your friendship?
Mersault was a time traveler and he knew what would happen to France in the 21st century.
The BIPOC was mag dumped today. Or yesterday, I cant be sure.
