Either they ran out of RCS (Reaction Control System) propellant or it was not powerful enough, that and the fins did not have enough control authority that high up. At the end the rocket went ass-forward into the plasma and most likely got tore up bad.

SpaceX are essentially taking a software engineering approach to regular engineering. Or at least they did initially, making suborbital flights with rockets carrying a small nuke's worth of fuel requires them to be a more restrained.

Yes but that's not recursion, that's iteration.

5 engines was enough for Saturn V it'll work for Starship too

And that's a one reason why Saturn V worked and Soviet rockets didn't. 33 small ass Raptors seems like a recipe for disaster.

          Anonymous

          N1 could've worked.
A lot of the problems were stupid & could've been solved if they had better simulators/more test opportunities.

          Anonymous

we live in the teraflop era, complexity is not as big an issue as it used to be.
33 raptors is playing the long game.
he wants to have hundreds of engines in reserve, each having done dozens of flights.
It's always easier making a shitload of small things than it is to make a couple huge things.

          Anonymous

Starship should be able to make it to orbit with a few failed engines. Saturn could not with even one failure.
N1 mostly failed because it was too ambitious for the time, and the lead designer died before launch attempts.

5 engines was enough for Saturn V it'll work for Starship too

Big engines are subject to flow separation and other problems. The F-1 was about as big of an engine as you'll likely ever see be made. Plus it's less redundancy. If the Raptors can keep getting more reliable, it will be better to just pump those out.

Starships are pretty cheap as far as rockets go. They already have several Starships and boosters ready for pre-launch testing. Although they'll most likely need to be adjusted in accordance to the IFT-3 data.

starships could be cheaper to make than falcon 9, big difference.
he's spinning up a bigass factory to make prototypes and blow those prototypes to shit one after the other.
not a single dollar was made back yet

the actual answer is that falcon 9 is his golden goose.
ridesharing while bringing costs down to earth is something he can do that no one else can
also he's got a lot of bidenbux because of the moon lander.

A full single Starship launch is worth 1/40th the cost of one single SLS (Boeing) that the US gov pays for.
