The only good proprietary I can think of is ANSYS because it has 50 years of development by engineers and recreating something like this under FOSS licenses is not feasible. Getting nostalgic over relatively new proprietary OS just because it had transparent effects is truly a mental moronation.

FOSS and Closed Source are not always black and white. In an ideal world there would be a middle ground between both, but it sounds impossible to figure out how.
There's been instances of propietary software fricking up users, because of some shit made by someone.
Conversely, there's been shitstorms caused by poorly written open source software, like code with a blatant vulnerability, or something that fails in an epic way.
Both have flaws, and neither should be seen as a single best way to develop software.
The main thing is communication of theory between developers and users. Ideal ease of access to artifacts is nice but the shared mental model and the ability of users to influence development are the important parts.
FOSS forces that outside of extreme high churn situations like GNOME so people think of them as synonymous but technically they're separate things and occasionally you'll see non-free software doing a better job of this than open source.
We already have a "middle ground", it's called source-available. It sucks. Hard.

There are tons of stuff I'd use if they were free I accept that. Some, hell maybe even lots, of proprietary software is good feature-wise but terrible when it comes to debugging, troubleshooting and privacy. Proprietary software could be more tolerable if they handled it like how Factorio does. No chink anti-cheat/anti-piracy running the moment you turn on your pc and you can disable data collection(before some Black person says "but you can't see the source", you can verify that with Wireshark). For me at least, the thing with proprietary software is that it's horrible troubleshooting wise. What made me stop using windows years ago was these meaningless error messages with the code 0xBlack person and links to a pajeet forum link spammed with "sar please run sfc scannow do the needful". I believe with a bit of change, proprietary software can be tolerated in some form, ie. programs like photo editors.

I'd say along Windows 2000, Windows 7 has been the pinnacle of Windows. No other OS has been as well liked as Windows 7 neither it was so well received by everyone. Sure it had it's flaws early on but they were fixed and it turned out to be a great OS in all senses

The windows API is incredibly flawed, and each version of drips out a few improvements, and once devs experience this improvements, they don't want to support old versions anymore because its painful to go back.

There is a difference between being nostalgic, and recognizing that the proprietary software has deliberately been made worse with every passing versions and therefore older versions are better.

Why don't more people contribute to ReactOS? It's open source Windows and if it became compatible enough you would have free Classic Windows forever. Imagine being able to use Windows XP in the 2050s, that's what ReactOS could be.

When Windows 7 was made, Microsoft still cared about making an OS that works the best it can for the user, so the user would buy the OS.
Windows 10 and 11 work against the user in many, many ways. There aren't ads in the start menu now, there aren't automatic installs for microtransaction ridden mobile-like games for the user's benefit.
Microsoft wants to extract value from you and since you didn't have to pay for Windows10+, stuff like this is the result.

As far as usability goes, I can, for example, see how the Start menu of Windows 10, with its inline expanding directories and scrollable items, is much more usable than the classic, ever-expanding static Start menu. I can also see the utility in GNOME's fullscreen application menu with large icons, and I agree that desktop icons are, at best, redundant. But does any of this really affect me that much? Meh.

2009 yeah but as far as I can remember it looks identical to the Windows XP Classic Theme from 2001. I don't have fond memories of Windows 9x, they sucked ass. Windows 7 was peak operating system, as long as you changed to Classic Theme which is what I did on day one.

thanks. looks like it does remove the blur, but not everywhere (theme selector), depending on whether the font itself supports it. there may or may not be a way to force Tahoma everywhere. the kerning also looks off in the urlbar.
I think the setting only affects GDI, perhaps DirectWrite or whatever doesn't acknowledge it and still draws AA'd text.
