Not gonna happen. Sure it was shit, but it was good too.

I'd say so, but I prefer Bash and my tiling WM at this point, so if Windows 7's UI was open-sourced, I wouldn't use it more than trying it out for old times' sake.

The only good proprietary I can think of is ANSYS because it has 50 years of development by engineers and recreating something like this under FOSS licenses is not feasible. Getting nostalgic over relatively new proprietary OS just because it had transparent effects is truly a mental moronation.
I can only remember that this garbage required some additional steps when you replace the CPU from a different vendor.

FOSS and Closed Source are not always black and white. In an ideal world there would be a middle ground between both, but it sounds impossible to figure out how.

There's been instances of propietary software fricking up users, because of some shit made by someone.

Conversely, there's been shitstorms caused by poorly written open source software, like code with a blatant vulnerability, or something that fails in an epic way.

Both have flaws, and neither should be seen as a single best way to develop software.

          Anonymous

The main thing is communication of theory between developers and users. Ideal ease of access to artifacts is nice but the shared mental model and the ability of users to influence development are the important parts.
FOSS forces that outside of extreme high churn situations like GNOME so people think of them as synonymous but technically they're separate things and occasionally you'll see non-free software doing a better job of this than open source.

It's the first one to come out during the era when you could expect basic things like not crashing/corrupting the rootfs etc. and it's the last before computers stopped being tools and started being "the edge" where corpos injected adware and worse into people's lives.

I'd argue it's good compared to a GNU system but compared to other winshit versions, 7 was the best. If I **had** to use a proprietary OS I'd pick windows 7.

      That's actually a good point.

Has any FOSSgay admitted that, while closed-source, there have been things that have been done right and they'd totally use them if it didn't violate their ideology?

There are tons of stuff I'd use if they were free I accept that. Some, hell maybe even lots, of proprietary software is good feature-wise but terrible when it comes to debugging, troubleshooting and privacy. Proprietary software could be more tolerable if they handled it like how Factorio does. No chink anti-cheat/anti-piracy running the moment you turn on your pc and you can disable data collection(before some Black person says "but you can't see the source", you can verify that with Wireshark). For me at least, the thing with proprietary software is that it's horrible troubleshooting wise. What made me stop using windows years ago was these meaningless error messages with the code 0xBlack person and links to a pajeet forum link spammed with "sar please run sfc scannow do the needful". I believe with a bit of change, proprietary software can be tolerated in some form, ie. programs like photo editors.

I'd say along Windows 2000, Windows 7 has been the pinnacle of Windows. No other OS has been as well liked as Windows 7 neither it was so well received by everyone. Sure it had it's flaws early on but they were fixed and it turned out to be a great OS in all senses

Nonsense. You know how old versions of windows are not usable on new computers. Well, that would be equally the same with no UI updates. Also, there are plenty of non UI improvements to be made. The windows API is incredibly flawed, and each version of drips out a few improvements, and once devs experience this improvements, they don't want to support old versions anymore because its painful to go back.

Fruitger aero is the name of the windows aero and web 2.0 aesthetic with skeuomorphic icons and glassy textures
It's not "revisionist bullshit", it's a retrospective name for an era that passed, you can't really identify an era's aesthetic while it's happening. It's not unique to aero either, there's very specific 90s and 80s aesthetics that are defined and given names retroactively.
It's similar to naming generations, it's simply useful for identification.

Also Aqua was basically doing this style long before aero did, but the one thing aero did introduce was a heavy focus on the translucent glass effect (which despite Apple's initial criticism ironically became the prominent visual motif in yosemite, just without the gloss and more aggressive blurring).

windows vista upon release was an microsoft knockoff ux of the osx at the time, which had used most of those visual design techniques years prior (high resolution 3d icons, glossy buttons and scroll bars etc.).

if you were alive and had interest in computer shit at the time you would know it. it's not something microsoft came up with, nor it has anything to due with adrian frutiger the mid-century typographer. in terms of such contemporary humanist sans-serif fonts for ui or advertising, apple were using lucida grande for the gui and adverts (known as lucida sans unicode in microshart office world).

all this 'aesthetics' shit turned from some joke facebook groups to discord moron revisionism. it's so dumb because all of this stuff has been online since it's inception.

You guys are so fricking autistic kek
The reason you remember "aero" isn't because the deep state is doing a mandela effect and rewriting history, it's because because aero was the official name for the default theme on windows vista
The second word in "fruiteger aero" is a reference to that windows theme, since it was a prime example of the web 2.0 design language that most people remember
You're just mad because it has the word "aero" in it. If it was called something else like "2000s naturalistic skeumoprhism" or some shit you wouldn't be having an tism meltdown over the fact that 2 different concepts have the same word

I want to know who invented the "frutiger" meme. If I start spamming the soitard spinoff with image macros calling the metro ui something moronic like "strunfuder metro" will all zoomies start calling it "strunfuder metro" too even though it's a made up word?

Its a zoomer nostalgia cult, it could have been called anything and people would have gone with it, see vaporwave or Y2K or any of the dumb millennial aesthetic movements that caught on.

Yeah, but 7 and above are uncustomizable. The most customization you can have is Wallpaper Engine and Rainmeter, which may affect performance and is a far cry from what you can do on Linux.

I don't feel nostalgic, maybe for the software and games that were developed during that time along with old web design, also, that UI Aero glass shit made it slow, it might look prettier than the flat design we have today though, I still prefer the older versions now because of how bloated Windows 11 has become, notice how Windows 10 above has ads in the start menu, fricking pathetic.

Why don't more people contribute to ReactOS? It's open source Windows and if it became compatible enough you would have free Classic Windows forever. Imagine being able to use Windows XP in the 2050s, that's what ReactOS could be.

People only use Windows because of software support.
Nobody wants a Windows-like OS otherwise.

ReactOS will never be usable. Also, I am pretty sure its controlled oposition, to waste developer effort.

The practical appeal of ReactOS isn't to be a replacement for modern Windows, it's to be a replacement for legacy versions of Windows that were abandoned ages ago.
Also, they entirely gave up on collaborating with the Wine devs, which was probably a mistake in the long term.

It was dog shit absolute dog shit and why you'd get third party applications that modified everything visualstyles7 or some shit I forgot. It was huge and bloated. The difference with win11 or win10 is you could change shit enough where you really didn't need to use a load of programs to get things to look nice. However win11 on the verge of becoming shit because you can't even make the taskbar small only to show the time.

When Windows 7 was made, Microsoft still cared about making an OS that works the best it can for the user, so the user would buy the OS.

Windows 10 and 11 work against the user in many, many ways. There aren't ads in the start menu now, there aren't automatic installs for microtransaction ridden mobile-like games for the user's benefit.
Microsoft wants to extract value from you and since you didn't have to pay for Windows10+, stuff like this is the result.

times were better in every sense and corpo didnt have the tech industry in a chokehold like they do now. everything now is corporatized every app has 20 telemetries for the sake of harvesting data about you and the tech industry only makes shit to keep harvesting more info in more ways. its not just nostalgia.

Pretty much. I mostly just stick to whatever the default is. I can never relate to all the autists endlessly discussing desktop environments - it's just a fricking program launcher, who fricking cares.

As far as usability goes, I can, for example, see how the Start menu of Windows 10, with its inline expanding directories and scrollable items, is much more usable than the classic, ever-expanding static Start menu. I can also see the utility in GNOME's fullscreen application menu with large icons, and I agree that desktop icons are, at best, redundant. But does any of this really affect me that much? Meh.

it's still proprietary. XP does have the advantage though in that its source code is available. Not legally, but you do know what you're running. Here's to hoping for a leak for 7 so that I know what's inside the best windows.

2009 yeah but as far as I can remember it looks identical to the Windows XP Classic Theme from 2001. I don't have fond memories of Windows 9x, they sucked ass. Windows 7 was peak operating system, as long as you changed to Classic Theme which is what I did on day one.

thanks. looks like it does remove the blur, but not everywhere (theme selector), depending on whether the font itself supports it. there may or may not be a way to force Tahoma everywhere. the kerning also looks off in the urlbar.
