Superficial discussion

Has anyone else noticed that discussion of books on IQfy is just confined to name dropping? Every time some philosophical or literary work is discussed here, no one talks about the ideas explored in the book. Everyone just makes cryptic allusions to something in the book or says it's good or bad.

Yes, I ignore posts that aren't actually about the content of a book. IQfy is 90% people having discussions about "relativism" with vague references to Hume while never having read Hume, or some equivalent.

I would say that the user turnover for this board is one of the highest on this site. It's constantly stuck in the 'enthusiastic beginner who doesn't really know what he's talking about' phase and I imagine that most people will just get bored of the board once they get past the surface level.
There's still good discussion to be had but you've got to go searching for it.
Plus there's the posters who read just because they want to be seen as readers, for whom vaguely namedropping a book and then leaving the conversation is the only thing they were aiming for in the first place.
"Damn, this guy reads" they say to themselves, looking in the mirror.

IQfy is an exit board, like IQfy. After a while of reading good literature, you kind of get tired of the morons on here. And so few of them can discuss anything about what you're reading, that you just stop coming here.

For IQfy, it's because you start getting laid

Incentives. No one will effortpost without the possibility of a return. Even Reddit with its Updoots gives – something – to favour discourse.

This is life. You can either have purity, or utility. IQfy opts for the former in having free discussions without depth.

    [...]

That wasn't a low effort or bait post. I actually mean every word i say.

People post on IQfy because it isn't a place with the cancerous safespace ecochamber mentality of shitholes like reddit. Idiots with no grasp on how the internet actually works, such as yourself, will go and say shit like "durr upvotes incentivize good posting" in total and complete ignorance, when what actually happens is that any--ANY--opinion that's minimally controversial or goes against the status quo in the slightest is downvoted to death and goes into oblivion, and that's to say when it isn't downright censored.
And don't even get me started on karma system and the fact that people can see other user's post history, which leads to nothing but "REEEEE YOU POST ON SUB I DON'T LIKE" ad-hominem fallacies.

On a place like IQfy an obvious low-quality shitpost can be just ignored, your focus being directed instead to posts that are of actual interest and intellectual value. From then you can have actual meaningful discussion because you know you aren't gonna get censored for wrongthink or for calling someone saying something moronic moronic.

As i said before tho: you clearly like it better there. Just close this site and go back. Nobody whatsoever is asking you to stay here.

Except most users reply almost exclusively to bait, sometimes purposefully, sometimes not. The average user is a maladjusted teen (usually male, ASD). The boards are littered with demoralization threads and porn. We can both agree that this is the better option, but this place sucks.

        Anonymous

Hey you baiting literal homosexual who obviously comes from reddit and is accusing me of what you are--you see that shit right there? That's a line break without a double enter. My post is not """reddit-spaced"""" because such a thing would simply be not possible on reddit.
You, on the other hand, don't even know basic greentext posting norms from IQfy while trying to call anyone else anything. You put a space after the angle bracket. You should be grateful i even took a minute of my life replying to your moronic post and go the frick back to whatever shithole you crawled out of.

        Anonymous

Reddit automatically puts space between paragraphs when you press enter. So if someone was accustomed to using reddit, there wouldn't be a space between paragraphs...because they are so used to reddit doing it for them...

In other words, not having space between your paragraphs indicates you come from reddit.

IQfy absolutely has echo chamber mentality. Most threads are just anons endlessly echoing opinions typical of IQfy browsers at one another

            Anonymous

No they fricking aren't. You are totally, absolutely delusional.
Almost every single thread with a decent number of replies is composed of nothing but either dumb or intellectual shitflinging, people aggressively attacking each other and trying to destroy the other's opinions at no matter what cost.

How the frick is this "echochamber" you insane moron?

            Anonymous

An echochamber is uniformity of phenomena. Namely, a corresponding co-ordinate response from one side of the chamber in the exact same manner as from the opposite side. Dogmatic negation is an echochamber, as much as 0 is an even number.

            Anonymous

            >in the exact same manner as from the opposite side
Even disregarding your homosexualy semantic dishonesty you're completely wrong, because a poster couldsimply reply intellectually to a post that's obvious bait and he wouldn't be making a response in the "exact same manner".

Now regarding your homosexualy semantic dishonesty: frick off, moron. You know exactly what i mean by "echochamber".

            >either dumb or intellectual shitflinging, people aggressively attacking each other and trying to destroy the other's opinions at no matter what cost.
They do this on reddit too, they’re just more passive aggressive about it.
These arguments are also pointless and take place within an acceptable IQfy bubble. As an example you will almost never see anyone on IQfy genuinely try to make arguments in favor of leftist views that are common on reddit. They exist, but it’s usually false flag bait and will get summarily dumped on by the IQfy hive in the same way that redditors hone in on an even remotely conservative comment. IQfy also has a culture, and those who fail to conform to it will be told to gtfo. I’m not saying this is good or bad but it’s what it is. If people here didn’t want to see variations of their own opinions they’d be browsing the other social media platforms they hate instead of here.

You must not lurk around IQfy enough. It happens extremely often. Even more so since 2016. And differently from reddit, you're not gonna immediately get censored and/or banned for going against the opinion of the masses. You can defend extreme leftism in here as much as you want. No one is stopping you. Try doing the same thing (but with anti-reddit opinions) on that other site and see what happens.

I started browsing IQfy and this site in late 2020 and I agree. I actually had positive experiences with people here, believe or not. Insight, wit, and encouragement abounded. I'm a STEM major who reads classic russian literature for pleasure and recreation. Though I do often get insights into the author and book while reading, I can't be bothered to actively make an interpretation and analysis that I can offer to a discussion so I mostly just lurk and if not, make rec threads. Sorry if the reply is incongruous.

Yes, not to mention that whenever someone writes some longer paragraph, the rest refuses to read it (on IQfy) and replies with some bullshit one-liner
