This isn’t what happened. They fed him for like 3 months. And if you’re a fricking bug you aren’t exactly the “you” that they may have loved before. If you think about it, they had no basis for assuming that the bug was gregor at all. His sister basically broke at the end and that’s why they let him die.
They felt as if they were indebted to him. Once the debt was paid off, he was just a burden to them, ready to be thrown away.

close to them persons keep them alive as that allows them to perceive themselves as virtuous. It's a moral norm most of us were taught from being a kid. If our teachers told us disabled people are but a burden, not the same as other people, we would only perceive them as that and would get rid of them without feeling guilt
Archaeologists find prehistoric humans cared for sick and disabled back then there was no school or other public institutions and they did it anyway, so it's not just a matter of upbringing
