Personally I prefer Platonism and can only view existentialism as a line of thought that leads to a dead end, like it's precursor epicureanism. German idealism is just Platonism with a sheen of enlightenment rationalism laid over it.
Plotinus reaches the same conclusion as Kant about sense knowledge but goes the other direction by situating knowledge of things in themselves in the universal intellect of forms, rather than just giving up.
