The consequences of Harry Potter and other YA slop has been felt.

The consequences of Harry Potter and other YA slop has been felt. People don't write books anymore; they write books with the hope it'll be picked up by Hollywood and turned into a moneymachine.
Is there any realisitc way to fix the publishing industry? Has anyone here sold their souls to the publiching industry for some shekelcoins? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

I still write books. And I don't write for Hollywood now. I already did some work for Hollywood.

So you've already sold your soul for some shekelcoins? How does that make you feel? How was the expereince? Do you feel dirty, like a prostitute, or proud and vulgar like an onlyfans model?

Nah, the soul is unsellable. Writing about my soul is sellable. You'd know that if you had written.
It's still work though, and that comes with its ups and downs, boredom and engagements. I don't feel the things that you describe, but I am a bit tired of exertion.

For other people; for money. I don't want to be a "professional." I want to make art and be a human being.

Literature will always be created, and it will always be made by fringes, outliers, or the elite class (not entirely financially determined). Book industry is made for plebs, by plebs. There aught to be a term to distinguish between "books" in the traditional sense, and "books" in the sense of slop made to become a tv show. Thankfully it remains more or less possible to easily detect and avoid this latter category considering the vast majority falls under
    >sci-fi
    >fantasy
    >YA fiction

Avoid these genres and you will barely ever encounter the trash you are taking about. It filters a solid 90%. An additional 9% is political books (guns germs and steel), narcissism/vanity books (ex: autobiographies from unremarkable people), and i guess "tell all" books.

Basically just avoid that and you can enjoy reading

While there are works in these genres that have literary merit, this anon's heuristic is generally correct. For every book like A Voyage to Arcturus, A Canticle for Liebowitz, or Gormenghast there are dozens of novels of stock-action schlock that doesn't have anything novel to say.

wtf people write books to get tv/movie deals? that's crazy bro

That's why all these YA authors are getting multimillion dollar deals for their clichéd-filled books. The agents and publishers are selling the film rights to Hollywood and hoping for the billion dollar payout.
