The Flea by John Donne

Mark but this flea, and mark in this,
How little that which thou deniest me is;
It sucked me first, and now sucks thee,
And in this flea our two bloods mingled be;
Thou know’st that this cannot be said
A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead,
Yet this enjoys before it woo,
And pampered swells with one blood made of two,
And this, alas, is more than we would do.

Oh stay, three lives in one flea spare,
Where we almost, nay more than married are.
This flea is you and I, and this
Our marriage bed, and marriage temple is;
Though parents grudge, and you, w'are met,
And cloistered in these living walls of jet.
Though use make you apt to kill me,
Let not to that, self-murder added be,
And sacrilege, three sins in killing three.

Cruel and sudden, hast thou since
Purpled thy nail, in blood of innocence?
Wherein could this flea guilty be,
Except in that drop which it sucked from thee?
Yet thou triumph’st, and say'st that thou
Find’st not thy self, nor me the weaker now;
’Tis true; then learn how false, fears be:
Just so much honor, when thou yield’st to me,
Will waste, as this flea’s death took life from thee.

    Such an amazing poem. This is the best by Donne, really shows what makes him stand out amongst his peers and his particular view of language ––very modern. But I will not tell you what's so amazing about this poem because I am writing an essay on Donne where I'll explain it.

        Just for fun. Don't really care right now about getting published, but who knows, I wouldn't mind publishing this essay in some magazine.

          you gonna submit it to a IQfy magazine? &amp will probably take it and gardner might start his own (although he'll probably fill it with his shit and make it unreadable)

        She’s okay. Overrated, and she’s oversized. trinikleiveland and ermiralika are the superior Scandinavian asses. Even her sister Amanda is better to me. If you’re into huge porn-ass like Filippa, check out nessbynature

        Just because some can not control themselves does not mean we all should suffer. Janny overstepped and everyone should report it, especially when Gardner's shill threads stay up. Donne deserves better.

        you read poetry?

        • 11 months ago

          I do and I have read Andrew Marvell. I had never seen someone refer to poetry as art so I thought that guy was talking about painting or something.

            As a reader of poetry you must know that 'art' is a relatively common figure for manner, or style. Though I like Donne, I prefer Marvell's poetic thinking, his use both of perspective and language (as two very general instances). Not that his 'art' is superior to Donne's; I merely prefer it.

            The Girl Describes her Fawn
            --Andrew Marvell

            With sweetest milk and sugar first
            I it at my own fingers nursed;
            And as it grew, so every day
            It wax'd more white and sweet than they--
            It had so sweet a breath! and oft
            I blush'd to see its foot more soft
            And white, --shall I say, --than my hand?
            Nay, any lady's of the land!

            It is a wondrous thing how fleet
            'Twas on those little silver feet:
            With what a pretty skipping grace
            It oft would challenge me the race:--
            And when 't had left me far away
            'T would stay, and run again, and stay:
            For it was nimbler much than hinds,
            And trod as if on the four winds.

            I have a garden of my own,
            But so with roses overgrown
            And lilies, that you would it guess
            To be a little wilderness:
            And all the spring-time of the year
            It only lovèd to be there.

            Among the beds of lilies I
            Have sought it oft, where it should lie;
            Yet could not, till itself would rise,
            Find it, although before mine eyes:--
            For in the flaxen lilies' shade
            It like a bank of lilies laid.

            Upon the roses it would feed,
            Until its lips e'en seem'd to bleed:
            And then to me would boldly trip,
            And print those roses on my lip.
            But all its chief delight was still
            On roses thus itself to fill,
            And its pure virgin limbs to fold
            In whitest sheets of lilies cold:--
            Had it lived long it would have been
            Lilies without -- roses within.

            Nah Donne is better; just compare the amount of cliches and trite imagery here with the poem above, even if its musical. Not to mention for this sort of poem might as well read Blake's Songs instead.

            Kek
            Blake's not writing from the perspective of a young girl, for one thing, nor is Donne for that matter. I could go on, but if even this is list upon you, there's little point.
            I prefer macro- to micro- 'metaphysicality'
