Suddenly, the historical record goes from either being empty, or focusing exclusively on kings and sultans, to providing detailed accounts and depictions of famine, poverty and violence. Now every third-worldist can paint the colonial era as a hellish nightmare while pretending that everything that came before was like a pristine medieval romance.

Pre-colonial history also documented that too? A lot of famines were known of or recorded.
What records did the Congolese produce? How well did Indians document their own famines? Which pre-colonial society had its own photography?

Well there are Indians who documented prior famines in India. Sahelians knew that mega droughts came in frequently and write about it, Ethiopia has a frickton of Saint Hagiographies and court documents. The Swahili wrote of their history and trade. Coastal Yoruba used and knew if Latin and Arabic script
