There are now "independent" fact-checkers

Why is facebook deliberately pushing for fact checkers on everything. It started with a warning for sharing articles as to not spread "misinformation", and now this.

    >Why is facebook
Uhm sweetie it's meta now, therefore your post is disinfromation and misleading.

    >deliberately
    Uhm.. source on that?

    >pushing for fact checkers
Actually that's a good thing. You don't get paid for that. Altough I can agree that only people that have knowledge in some fields can do fact-checking becaues this is not a task for everyone. Another important question is who would do the fact-checking on fact-checkers? But we can leave this for a moment because in today's society there are other issues that require immediate action from the government.

    >on everything
Source on that? Not everything should be questioned. For example vaccines. I would say I got you on this logical fallacy but I won't because I respect you as a human being. I mean look at the conversatoin we are having right now. Isn't this good that two grown-up and mature men can have a converstation on "hot" topics that have a direct impact on our lives?

    >It started with a warning for sharing articles as to not spread "misinformation"
Well anon, the cyberspace (as I'm used to call that, it come from my cyberpunk books btw, I'm a huge Gibson fan) is a place of public domain therefore you can't just shit your opinion there like it's a toilet or someting and pretend it's ok. I think this is a good approach and we really need more control.

    >and now this
Let me fact-check this real quick. Oopsie, no source on that.

It's a result of post truth society.
There is more and more information out there and people give up on objective truth and focus on local, suubjective truth as presented by their echo chamber of choice.
Fact checkers are an attempt to apply bandaid on that issue, but it's way to grave to do anything about it without changing how society and internet handles information.

The farther your ideology drifts from reality the more important censorship becomes to maintaining power.

There is no "truth", only fact and narrative. Facts are basic and simple and provable at least in principle , e.g. "The sky is blue" or "<Person> was at <place> at <time>". Narrative is a superstructure built around a set of facts to attempt to give them a broader coherence and meaning. Narrative is unproven and generally not precise enough to be provable even hypothetically, e.g. "Vaccines are safe and effective" or "Putin is a doodiehead".

The tiny irrelevant minority of people who refuse to believe proven facts can be ignored as safely as flat earthers; reality will catch up to them eventually and in the meantime everyone with a brain will laugh at them. Censorship only needs to come in to police narratives.

moron. Fact checkers are just another way to control the flow of information, they only work the way the system wants them to work. It is just like television used to be. If you had nothing but radio and tv to get your opinions from whoever controls what comes from them can control what people think.

Just think of the Hunter biden laptop story. It was portrayed as a fake Russian dissinfo campaign when it wasn't. That surely helped Biden win. Now it has been proven correct but what difference does it make now. And who was saying it was fake? the same reliable trusted old media.

Fact checkers are just a way to give old media some of its power back. You can just go search for any topic in youtube and you will get MSNBC and others as top results and it is not because they are truthful.

It hasn't been like that for in the first world in years. Even poorgays have Internet access now.
The reality is that people WANT to be brainwashed, because the thought of being a social pariah for having unpopular views bothers them more than the thought of believing in untruth.

But anon, you are absolutely right. This is exactly what I'm talking about, but looked at from the opposite perspective.
Truth is how system controls the flow of information. Fact checkers attempt to do what television, universities, state or whatever powers to be used to do, they decided what is truth and what is a lie, and society followed. But because of the increase of amount of information, it became harder and harder to verify them and with increased ease of sharing information and echo chambers, a lot of new actors emerged who sell their own local truth and people fall for it for the same reason. Fact checkers are an attempt to bring back objectivity, but they won't. Not because they are corrupt, but because we are.

          >bring back objectivity
you morons never had objectivity, just unchallenged lies.

            Anonymous

This, that is the point of the controlling the flow of information. What gets pushed becomes the truth as there is nothing else to challenge it. People who talk about the internet being unrestricted probably cant remember what it used to be 15 years ago. Everything is facebook, youtube, google and twitter. Still it was enough to create a niche outside the mainstream. That was too threatening.

It is not that they want to get rid of fake news, they want their own fake news to be unchallenged. Imagine how different it would be to set up an Iraq war type of even now? It was easy back then.

They are getting that again, post 2016 they got too scared about people like trump rising up from those niche spaces.

Cardboard "help me" was from 2015 and from Philippines.
"NEED YOUR HELP" label is an awkward English translation nestled in a sentence where it makes at least some sense given context.
"I HAVE DENTAL PAIN" has yet to be proven to be a real tag and not a Photoshop.

They can only exist during a bubble/hyper polarization, much like clickbait. Remember back when "weapons of mass destruction" was a recurring lie across all outlets? The media wants to be right all the time and they want people to forget about the times they aren't. Microsoft actually bailed out like 15 or so newspaper companies in this state, maybe only 2.5% of the population was reading what they printed, without them maybe only two or of the larger (in state) papers would still be operating. All the people who lost their job at pseudo tabloid websites are becoming fact checkers.

interesting. i will ironically fact check this because if it is true it will be another intriguing point in the Obama legislating of propaganda use on US citizens. it will be hard to find the source of payments for these fact checkers but an amusing development.

All fact-checking studios affiliate with IFCN, the "International Fact-Checking Network". It does not matter whether you see them on Facebook or Twitter, they are governed by the same entity. They employ failed journalists to write on topics they do not understand doing very little "research".

IFCN is owned by Poynter Institute. They also own Politifact. They receive funds from Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Bill Gates Foundation.

    >During the pandemic, news outlets have widely looked to Bill Gates as a public health expert on covid—even though Gates has no medical training and is not a public official. PolitiFact and USA Today (run by the Poynter Institute and Gannett, respectively—both of which have received funds from the Gates Foundation) have even used their fact-checking platforms to defend Gates from “false conspiracy theories” and “misinformation,” like the idea that the foundation has financial investments in companies developing covid vaccines and therapies. In fact, the foundation’s website and most recent tax forms clearly show investments in such companies, including Gilead and CureVac.

Most importantly, it receives funds from Open Society Foundations, owned by no one else but George Soros, the same man behind companies such as BlackRock.
    What about Charles Koch foundation?

Essentially, Poynter is owned by a bunch of billionaires who use it as a shield to launder their reputation.
