with google if you search anything, doesn't matter what, anything at all, it defaults to showing you products
google doesn't think people search for any reason other than to look for a product to buy

Its not that search is bad, its that the content of the web itself has degraded. There is SIGNIFICANTLY more jeet/AI/SEO spam compared to 10-15 years ago.

the search is literally worse. you'll be given results with unrelated words highlighted, as if you typed them.

it's fascinating that no one has moved in on this market void yet. back in the day there were five or six legitimate web-crawling search engines.

I think the constant SEO/scripting makes it harder to run a search engine than it used to be but it can't really be that big of a deal and there is so much demand for something that actually searches the web instead of just reddit, quora, and corporate news sites.

      Anonymous

      >quora
any search engine that shows quora results on the first page is not a serious search engine and should be ignored

The search engine market void exists because if you were to offer a pure search engine in current year, you'll have your funding pulled once some homosexual discovers wrongthink can be found with it.

      how to do this?

NTA but you don't, LLMs are useful for actually pulling out information, openai gaslit you into believing that's what they're for. LLMs aren't compression algorithms, they don't store information, they will hallucinate details or outright make up plausible-sounding facts that aren't true. What you're supposed to do is arm an LLM with commands that allow it to use a normal search engine and make it analyze and summarise the results in context.

I already said there is also a $10 per month plan. In my case I own a business so I can tax deduct the cost of search so it isn't a big deal to me.

I just use randomized searxng instances through farside.link. I created custom search engine out of that by using full url parameters with searxng settings in it, so instances uses my settings globally. Only annoying thing is two instances that ignores url parameters so it just redirects to main search page and my search is "lost". So I have to always write search terms -> ctrl+a -> ctrl+c -> enter -> search works or if it doesn't -> ctrl+l -> ctrl+v -> enter -> maybe it now works. It is still better than giving all of my data to one corporation. I also have google search keyword so I can search things with google that are anonymous/public/useless anyway.

There is no good search engine. You can use Yandex to get things the US engines block. You can use a meme engine like Marginalia or Wiby if you just want to frick around for a few minutes. You can use Kagi if you really like features.

The trouble is that the Internet is trending in the wrong direction. It's deep in the corporate cycle of monetizing everything and unless you really like 'blogs' or 'podcasts' there's just not that many interesting people making interesting websites because there's no reason to anymore. The novelty wore off, be glad you got to see some crazy shit in the 90s and 2000s because today's internet is the ephemeral product of people's dayjobs.

Search engines are double fricked because the Internet is also trending away from persistent public information. Don't just save YouTube videos you like offline, save everything you like offline, because it's all going away soon. Hopefully soon there will be a real bifurcation where the next corporate tech trend isn't easy to use by amateurs, then at least the corporate web will separate itself and the old internet will either flourish or die.

I know this seems crazy but I have a crackpot theory that google is running out of money and silently de-listing more and more old content and hoping nobody notices. I swear there are very specific niche search terms where I used to get pages of results and now I only get 1 or 2, or content I know used to show up just doesn't anymore.

      Anonymous

they are delisting sites because AI will be on a subscription model and they want you to pay up
