It's not only Apple's first party apps, banking and enterprise apps will stop working in a year or two.
The main problem is, even if you avoid using the apps, websites will eventually not work properly because your browser will be forced to use old Webkit versions that are baked into the OS. Updating the browser doesn't update the engine. That's why iPhones are good but not the best for longevity, even the oldest Galaxy phones can run the newest Firefox and everything works fine.
What if I only use my phone for calls/texts/plain text email and music? OS support means nothing. A headphone jack and a size so small you forget it's in your pocket trumps everything else.
Proof? Most people I see are 2ish generations behind with several 4 gens back. I haven't thought about replacing my se 2nd gen because unlike my former Motorola phones I actually get updates.
