I noticed about 3/4ths of the way through the first book that the author was making up the setting in real time

Its been a while but didn't they still work but were inactive because the techno core was supposedly destroyed but really just in hiding
In hyperion they belived the tecnocore was in the portals and destroyed them with bombs.
In endymion they are still uo without working except for the girl.

It's been a while since I read it, but weren't the bombs set to go off inside whatever weird space was inside the gate network? I distinctly remember a suicide bomb run for exactly that reason at the end.
