This is a large problem in the US. Why?

In Europe there is no one using iMessage in the first place.

I use SMS because I use Lineage and I don't want to install Signal. Why do people b***h about SMS so much anyway? Who the frick cares about typing indicators and read receipts?

      Anonymous

Its not for those reasons that people dislike SMS it's the fact that it compresses pictures and videos to all hell. It can also take longer to upload/receive messages, due to poor signal in the area. I currently live in an area with poor cellular reception, and so i'm forced to disable phone service; Otherwise, my battery drains throughout the day. Surprisingly, there hasn't been any issues with switching over from SMS to whatsapp with my friends/colleagues; Even with me living in the US.

Because USA is fundamentally batshit insane porgressivist country and equity is now name of the game and because some people cant own 1000€ iPhone then that means nobody can have blue chat bubbles to indicate they are using iMessage and not just SMS. That is all there is to that.

Wait a second, blue means iMessage (text over internet, e2e encrypted, authenticated?) and green means SMS (no encryption, no mitm protection?)? So it's like I send someone a message with Signal, and he responds with a SMS? That would indeed be weird. Why don't Americans use a cross-platform messenger?

      Anonymous

      >Why don't Americans use a cross-platform messenger?
The short answer is that free, unlimited texting using pre-installed apps became a thing in the U.S. well before internet based cross platform messengers were even made possible, and the network effect is an powerful thing. Without the driving force of being able to save money while texting, and combined with the fact that about half the population got those features when using their built in texting app (iMessage) anyway, there was never a decisive incentive for Americans to look for a solution to a problem that really only practically boils down to a minor inconvenience. Especially when that solution inherently involves convincing others to go out of their way just to avoid inconveniencing you.

sms is basically free, the scam is the companies charging you for something that practically costs them nothing, the fact the all Europeans have to get around SMS by installing third party apps is the real tragedy here.

How do they build and maintain infrastructure worth billions from "practically no costs"? I hope you are trolling. The price of your "free" sms is included in your phone plan and taxes.

Not him but he means the infrastructure needed for SMS was really cheap so each SMS should realistically cost less than one cent even back in the 90's.

But European carriers charged a lot more because:
            A) They were worried SMS would hurt their phone call business.
            B) They wanted to make loads of money off SMS.

The point is that IM sercices like whatsapp make SMS completely redundant amd moronic americans still using SMS should kill themselves.

The US is the most neoliberal capitalist country in the world, so people are very very individualist. Public education is shit, because they want (and need) poor people to fail in school, so they feel like it's their own fault if they have to work for a job that no one wants to do. But that unfortunately leads to people being dumb, so you have some of the dumbest people in the richest country of the world, which at first seems counter intuitive, but makes sense when you need to exploit poor people for the economy to work.
      And then, this happens

When Apple shipped iMessage, it was a drop-in replacement for iPhone users. Even the carriers didn't know about iMessage.

Here in the states, it just took off since nobody knew the difference between iMessage & SMS.

I think you'll get base RCS support in June, with Apple running iPhone access.

iMessage has been a great lock-in for Apple. If RCS ships, I'd bet there's another iMessage lock-in that will be announced with RCS.
