I currently live in an area with poor cellular reception, and so i'm forced to disable phone service; Otherwise, my battery drains throughout the day. Surprisingly, there hasn't been any issues with switching over from SMS to whatsapp with my friends/colleagues; Even with me living in the US.

The short answer is that free, unlimited texting using pre-installed apps became a thing in the U.S. well before internet based cross platform messengers were even made possible, and the network effect is an powerful thing. Without the driving force of being able to save money while texting, and combined with the fact that about half the population got those features when using their built in texting app (iMessage) anyway, there was never a decisive incentive for Americans to look for a solution to a problem that really only practically boils down to a minor inconvenience. Especially when that solution inherently involves convincing others to go out of their way just to avoid inconveniencing you.
sms is basically free, the scam is the companies charging you for something that practically costs them nothing, the fact the all Europeans have to get around SMS by installing third party apps is the real tragedy here.
