Basically Ted’s thesis but in more detail. The tendency towards efficiency and pragmatism has led to a mechanized “soulless” world

How come the most allegedly anti-society, anti-consumerist, anti-status quo people are the ones always telling people to go outside, be with “friends,” go to overpriced bars and blow all one’s money on apartments in overcrowded and envied neighborhoods in the choice global cities? Seems almost like French theory is just another example of basednarchistic lifestylism and has nothing to do with radical anti-capitalism

Our contemporary societies blindly worship the idea of technique. Technique is defined as "the totality of methods rationally arrived at and having absolute efficiency in every field of human activity", in contrast to the English sense of technology as individual material things. Ellul specifically refers to 7 traits of technique: rationality, artificiality, automatism, self-augmentation, universalism, wholeness, and autonomy. These ideas permeate in every division of life, the political, economic, scientific, etc., uniting them to a common goal of "perfecting" technique.

In this system, the relationship between theory, action, and reflection (praxis) are destroyed. The means and the ends in the technical society are the same, to achieve a purely efficient system for the development of new technologies which increasingly developer newer technologies and so forth.

By becoming conscious of technique, people can observe how their freedom of action has been almost completely eliminated from meaningfully affecting their situation, and strive to develop their own way of thinking and doing outside of the technical milieu.
