I would argue still a better choice than discord. You can still self-host it and constrict the metadata that reach the main server.

Samegayging this hard. Also no, Matrix is not an Israel-affiliated (very rare that I ever say that). Its federated nature literally means you can host your own homeserver to interact with others. Don't like the default matrix.org homeserver? Don't use it.

I had Discord open in my PC browser and phone (mobile data), restarted my phone to check something and then I opened discord on the phone again, only to be met by a "suspicious activity please insert phone number" screen. My bet is that seeing the login on 2 different IPs triggered it, but I've always had them open on both PC and Phone at the same time with no problems so I'm not sure what was different this time. See if you can reproduce it if you're feeling lucky.

            >what is this principle that you're doubling down on
I'm just crying out against the normalization of giving companies your phone number, especially when they don't need them. I mean at least if they ask for it upfront at the beginning like Signal does, I wouldn't have anything to complain about, but I find it scummy to hold all your contacts information hostage until you agree to give them your number.

This happened to me but using the official client and a not official one with my user token cookie. Discord is a trash of a company. You should unironically switch to any matrix protocol software.
Try deleting all your cookies, using a different web browser (maybe firedragon?) and changing your IP and then making a new account. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't.
Tip: get the frick off of Discord and embrace the fediverse or go full XMPP.

This even happened to me on Twitter, my account being locked without me even twitting anything at all. These companies are bullshit.

If that browser thing doesn't work buy a new SIM card and pray it's one of the ones that are not range blocked/not allowed for registration (read the ToS and it'll tell you which ones are) but only if you didn't do anything iffy on the platform. If you did you're dumb and got into this yourself.

I don't really keep crypto saved, and doesn't it ask for a huge minimum treshold?

Using Firefox on Linux can trigger that suspicious activity thing from Discord. Using Chrome on Linux doesn't. No clue how it is with Epiphany because it essentially looks behaves and virtually is just Safari.

Many such cases. They know that if they demand your phone from the get-go, you'll just leave. But if they let you create an account, and then take it hostage, they know that you'll be forced to give phone. It's a simple criminal scheme, made by gangster devs, which are very frequent those days.
You know that they actually don't care about you because they specifically demand cellphone number, not TOTP or other 2FA methods. All their claims about "we do it for your security" are plain lies.

You can even schedule coom sessions via the calendar.

They have that feature too in Discord now. But knowing them, they probably "stole" it from Guilded. Thanks sticky anon.

Request your data under GDPR. They'll tell you to log in to make that request in app. Tell them you can't log in because of phone verification. Make a GDPR complaint and include it in support ticket. Your phone verification requirement will be lifted in under 24hr.

They can't check. It applies to all data passing through Europe AND to all data of EU citizens AND they can't require citizenship verification.

EU tech laws are global laws, god bless'em.

You can only make a GDPR complaint if they can identify you. You can't just go and claim that you are the owner of random accounts. I'm sure they will be glad to look into your case if you provide a photo of your driver's license or passport and your phone number :^) Once they identified you, they will be glad to comply with your GDPR deletion request, but keep in mind that they will store the data on you to prevent abuse :^)

The exact same thing happened to my "normie" twitter account and a youtube account. Neither were posting anything bad. For twitter, all I did was log in on my desktop (which I have logged into before), for youtube it was just a while between logins (couple years). They fricking say it's to confirm I am the account owner, but that's complete bullshit since if anyone got as far as I did (password and email verification code) they could have given a number at that point to take over the account.

I hate the modern web so much.

You can fix this by using a chink pay-per-text service

just spend 1$ and get your acc back

Yeah but some of those don't present as a mobile MMS service and won't work. Worst is Kakaotalk, which has you text them, not the other way around.

Pay $2 for a Mint Mobile SIM. Use that as your phone number. Register whatever ever else you want in the seven days it is active. That's it.

    OP here, status update.
I ended up giving my phone number, I received a code and it didn't work. I repeated the process but this time I didn't receive any code. I tried this for a couple more times, and still nothing. After some questioning apparently my phone is now on a timeout and I can't use it to get another code for 14 days. Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem:
    https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360044114052-Remove-Verify-phone-timeout?page=2#comments
Customer support says they're not allowed to remove the timeout, for user safety, even if it's the same phone number for the same account.

Feel free to laugh at me, I'm a moron for even bothering.
