Valve has done the opposite in current times. They have open sourced some of their tech and they release and fund open source software

Heck, Proton and Linux runtime is all open source and none of these depend on Steam. You get improvements to Wine with Proton and its all open source

There's plenty of DRMless games on Steam where you can just go the game files, copy the executable, and do whatever you want with it.

Everyone else is losing because they simply refuse to provide a better service, or even one as good. Valve does not have a deliberate monopoly, the rest of the industry simply lets them win.
Case in point, their biggest competitor (Epic Games) spends literal billions on frivolous lawsuits instead of just improving their digital distribution platform, which is why most EGS users also have Steam accounts.

A monopoly is when there's no competition. We can assume its because Gaben is GOD and his word is the law, but thats a huge stretch and only works when you're into the cult.

            https://www.tweaktown.com/news/94707/valves-gabe-newell-ordered-to-make-court-appearance-in-steam-antitrust-case/index.html

The court of law is currently trying to understand the complex anti-competitive practices employed by Valve against small time competitions. The anti trust case is still open. Even if you want to worship Gaben, God isn't perfect.

There is nothing complex about it: Valve does what they want because no one wants to provide a better service, despite the fact that there are numerous game companies in the US alone that are much larger than Valve.
Steam isn't the disease, it's just a symptom of how shit the game industry is.

It's exactly the opposite. Their competitors make exclusivity deals, especially EGS, and people still prefer Steam because it just sucks less. The alternatives to Steam are so bad that people would literally prefer to just not play the game they want for a year.

Valve is funding ARM emulator though, they are going for it. Fex emu is doing really good right now, it can play God of War well

yes? Steam Deck is not locked down at all and Steams software is very open. They develop and fund FOSS as well

they use FOSS but everything they control themselves is proprietary

yes, like the Steam Linux runtime, Proton, Valve, gamescope, Steam audio
Then you have the stuff Valve funds like wayland, mesa, kde, wine

IQfy keeps shitting on tor just because it was funded ONCE by nsa. how is this different especially after all these posts, where valve works for gubbermint and complies with their sanctions orders

you think it was Valves choice to do that? Are you moronic? Genuinely mentally ill post

            >but muh company doesnt take calls from government
            >muh company is independent business

did you know there's this ongoing event perpetuated by russia that has led to reduced access to foreign and online services, including payment processors?
you might want to try looking it up, googling "russia current events" should be a decent starting point

please explain what Valve should've done to not stop accepting payments from Russia. I give you one chance
He could've done a lot more but just did what he is obliged to do

anything they fund might as well have nsa backdoors too. especially since valve's services are still proprietary
you know red star os also made of open source tools?

that valve is company who has its interests in the company and not in consumer or the people and open source

yes expect when its not publicly traded, it can have better business practices when it doesnt have shit load of stock owners whose only unified interest is making money therefore everything else is secondary

I wish they stop developing and supporting Wine, we need native Linux (static linked) binaries for each single game-

That's a pipe dream, this requires them to spend 10x or more to the same thing with native as they do with wine.

they havent. You still need to reverse engineer Windows ARM laptops to make them work

Oh no I am not talking about the stupid deal with qualcomm that killed windows on arm adoption.

Does ARM still have that problem where you can't load your own bootloader?
Can you even properly install your own OS on an ARM device?
If a device comes with it's own OS and you can't change it then no I wouldn't buy it.

Valve wouldnt lock down their hardware like that. That is exactly the point. That would be very non-Valve thing to do and no one would buy a Linux machine that would be locked down like that

      Anonymous

Just like their x86 cousins all windows arm laptops have a normal-ish uefi and allow you to disable secure boot very easily.
Getting linux booting is another story because microsoft(or qcom not sure) extended acpi in an undocumented way to implement arm specific shit like big.little and various power management options so linux still needs a device tree because acpi on linux always was a total trashfire.
