They put money into making everyone more reliant on steam, that's it. Like all their work on 'improving' linux everyone loves to talk about requires you to use steam. Their VR ecosystem requires steam. Using steam means they get a massive cut of whatever game is being sold, that's money that will never be reinvested to make more games.

Yeah but where are the games? They used to be one of the best game studios out there. Now it seems like they've all but given up on making anything new (except that Half Life VR game which admittedly I didn't play). I can't say I totally blame them when they're sitting on a goldmine with steam, but it's sad.
Well, they updated all their classics, are still "releasing" CS2, and are currently working on 2 Half-Life games with L4D3 on waitlist.
