VVC (H.266) is here

The newest version of Media Player Classic Home Cinema has VVC support:

https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases/tag/2.2.0

I have personally tried watching https://nyaa.si/view/1554243 and can confirm that it does not drop frames even on i7-3770.

(On the other hand, the interval between keyframes is insane.)

What, MPC-HC? I've tried it playing https://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1110484 and it was fine.

This doesn't even get to AV1's critical failure: cost of compression

What cost? SVT-AV1 is faster than x265 now.
VVC on the other hand is even slower than AOM-AV1 prototypes ever were.

        https://chipsandcheese.com/2023/04/16/codecs-for-the-4k-era-hevc-av1-vvc-and-beyond/

It seems to be, under very specific conditions. But either way, seems like VVC is a total meme given it's barely better than AV1 while taking almost twice as long to encode.

h.261 was pretty experimental and was eventually expanded into what you know as MPEG-1
      h.262 is just MPEG-2
h.263 basically never happened, never really gained a foothold

h263 was developed into DivX which gained commercial success, unlike DIVX which was resoundly rejected by the market

IIRC h.263 was designed for video phones a la Demolition Man, which basically never happened because who the hell wants to look at a 2" screen of someone using a telephone.
I remember some videos using h.263 like an edit of Steve Ballmer's developers developers developers as well as a music video based on Atari sound FX. It was good for pixelated videos where you wanted to preserve the pixelation instead of it being a blurred divx or Real Video mess.

This isn't exactly unique to VVC, it just requires some fiddling. This file https://pomf2.lain.la/f/jfk7pinl.webm has only one keyframe in 4:23 minutes and it's VP9.

mpv ostensibly already supports it but nobody is building (distributing) ffmpeg with VVC support for licensing reasons.
