Was I a fool to get M1 Macbook Air with only 8gb of ram instead of 16gb?
I never multi-task on it because I don't like multitasking. I use it for light web browsing, streamimg movies, video chats and sometimes libreoffice but never do any of those things simultaneously.
On idle i get 3.6/8gb ram usage and 5.6/8gb ram usage with a few programs open.
How many years will i be good for with 8gb of ram?
yes, tinder website regularly crashes for me with only 8GB memory if i have discord open as well
>I use it for light web browsing, streamimg movies, video chats and sometimes libreoffice
All of that is fine at 8GB. You only need 16GB if you start doing stuff like video editing, photo editing, gayming, etc.
Based
>paying 1k for a web browsing machine
KEKAROO.
t. broke Black person
You could go for a $500 Chromebook but it will steal your data and be much less comfy
or just a windows laptop
Even with 8GB video editing is fine, but thing gets abysmally hot.
all laptops get hot
thing has no cooling fans? you will have to throw thing into wall to make it fail before you
my phone has 8gb of ram. your computer has the same amount of ram as my PHONE
you fricked up bigtime hahahaha
>FirefoxCP
anon wtf???
We all make mistakes. The important thing is to learn from them.
>light web browsing, streamimg movies, video chats and sometimes libreoffice
Should be good for years.
>Was I a fool to get M1 Macbook Air with only 8gb of ram instead of 16gb?
Yes.
Enjoy.
My ipad m1 pro has 8 gigs of ram. For a laptop at that price I expect 16 gigs.
Yes. Apple should just be honest and hike the price by $200 and make the base model 16gb. The thing that sucks is when these things are discounted at retailers they are still ONLY 8GB. They are literally producing future ewaste netbooks with overspec processors since you cannot upgrade the ram on your own. 8gb for a brand new laptop in 2024 is a bad buy at ANY price.
>8gb for a brand new laptop in 2024 is a bad buy at ANY price
Not really at under £500 it is the norm, those processors anyway are extremely terrible using like ryzen 5500us and under. And even then 8gb is still ok for most tasks. 16gb is overkill and people shouldn't really act as if 32gb needs to be the norm.
For a few hundred dollars more you could have had a machine that will last you a lot longer. When I buy a Mac I expect to get 5 years out of it, not replace it in a year or two. 8gb ain't lasting you 5 years, even for just browsing. Especially at the rate the web is bloating.
>are extremely terrible using like ryzen 5500us and under
you mean using a chip thats as fast as an M1 LOL
the absolute cope people have in their brains to excuse overpaying on crappy hardware
Utilized ram is very misleading because the OS will usually have quite some ram in use even if you dont have a lot of stuff going on because not using free ram is basically wasting it. Theres lots of videos on youtube that showcase you dont need more than 8 gigs of ram on a mac if youre not doing heavier video editing or are a dev. https://youtu.be/l3zIwPgan7M?si=f3DwkFasU1IBKgsz
ram usage can be misleading, often files and programs are cached in ram for faster loading and will be kicked out if you have actual shit to do.
Considering that they're artificially inflating prices on ram and ssds, and your pc probably would've cost $300 more with 8 gb more ram, it's hard to defend increasing the ram honestly. Same with ssds, increase them from 256 to 512gb costs like $300, it's insane.
Yes you definitely need 16gb of ram on an extremely RAM optimized operating system for web browsing you fricking moron
i have one and in normal usage it's fine, i only notice an slowdown then i have chrome with two dozen tabs open, vscode, spotify and a bunch of other stuff open. the usage you describe should be good
although i wouldn't buy a new macbook with 8gb, buying an used one for cheap is fine imo
>she bought a new computer in year 1990 + (17 * 2) with only 8 GB and a shitty gen 1 processor
youre just enforcing the stereotype of the 60 IQ mac user
You'll be fine for many years to come. Windows gays in here don't understand macOS memory compression.
>You'll be fine for many years to come
How many years does it take for the swap file to kill an ssd you can't replace?
For OP's usage it will rarely swap. He'd only have to worry about SSD writes if he were doing a lot of video editing.
The OS isn't going to waste time compressing RAM if it doesn't need to.
then why does the anon with even more RAM usage have less compressed?
also posting my epeen for ref
apparently my fellow apple gays don't understand either because at 9gbs ram usage barely any of that is compressed
No apple said 8 gb are good enough
>Was I a fool to get a Mac?
Yes.
I'm using a Windows on ARM and I have 16Gb RAM. Probably paid quarter of what you had to pay, limao.
>I never multi-task on it because I don't like multitasking
at that point just get a fricking dos computer you brick
found the last surviving windows 2000 fanboy
Back in the PowerPC days you only needed 128MB of RAM. MacOS has bloated over 64 times.
>I never multi-task on it because I don't like multitasking. I use it for light web browsing
If you have multiple tabs on your web browser, that's multitasking.
Only really need to worry if you are regularly hitting high memory pressure in activity monitor. I've only been able to crash my browser once on 8gb with a ton of other shit open.
So go about your usual stuff and tab into activity monitor's memory use monitoring and see where you are at. It will give you a realistic metric to go off of.

Kinda scary though, doesn't the average SSD cap at 150-300TB?
Could be thrashing lol.
>I don't need no 16GB of RAM!
>*OS thrashes SSD to death within 3 years*
The SSD could be so fast that it has minimal impact on performance. Happening right under the posters nose.
Also suspicious that it has read about as much as it has written. The user is not likely to be transferring such large amounts of data through it like a giant flash drive.
I'm on 16G
it's not enough bro
get the 24G
I would upgrade to the M4MBP 14” if i was in your position
Maybe extra ram than the starting amount
Just upgrade your ram
Crapple is slowly dying without Steve Jobs.
I have an 8GB M1. Never ran into a problem with multiple browsers open, iMessage, Textedit, Terminal, Inkscape, GIMP, and VLC playing videos. No glitches, pauses, and the machine runs cold.
depends on what you use that 8gb for. if it's enough for you then you did fine.
>idle
it's swap and it adjusts dynamically vaws on how much ram you have available. mOS cannot use more than 500mb for its normal operations. windows is about 500mb.
yes
