Was I a fool to get M1 Macbook Air with only 8gb of ram instead of 16gb?

Was I a fool to get M1 Macbook Air with only 8gb of ram instead of 16gb?
I never multi-task on it because I don't like multitasking. I use it for light web browsing, streamimg movies, video chats and sometimes libreoffice but never do any of those things simultaneously.
On idle i get 3.6/8gb ram usage and 5.6/8gb ram usage with a few programs open.

How many years will i be good for with 8gb of ram?

All of that is fine at 8GB. You only need 16GB if you start doing stuff like video editing, photo editing, gayming, etc.

      Should be good for years.

Utilized ram is very misleading because the OS will usually have quite some ram in use even if you dont have a lot of stuff going on because not using free ram is basically wasting it. Theres lots of videos on youtube that showcase you dont need more than 8 gigs of ram on a mac if youre not doing heavier video editing or are a dev. https://youtu.be/l3zIwPgan7M?si=f3DwkFasU1IBKgsz

ram usage can be misleading, often files and programs are cached in ram for faster loading and will be kicked out if you have actual shit to do.

My ipad m1 pro has 8 gigs of ram. For a laptop at that price I expect 16 gigs.

Yes. Apple should just be honest and hike the price by $200 and make the base model 16gb. The thing that sucks is when these things are discounted at retailers they are still ONLY 8GB. They are literally producing future ewaste netbooks with overspec processors since you cannot upgrade the ram on your own. 8gb for a brand new laptop in 2024 is a bad buy at ANY price.

      >8gb for a brand new laptop in 2024 is a bad buy at ANY price
Not really at under £500 it is the norm, those processors anyway are extremely terrible using like ryzen 5500us and under. And even then 8gb is still ok for most tasks. 16gb is overkill and people shouldn't really act as if 32gb needs to be the norm.

For a few hundred dollars more you could have had a machine that will last you a lot longer. When I buy a Mac I expect to get 5 years out of it, not replace it in a year or two. 8gb ain't lasting you 5 years, even for just browsing. Especially at the rate the web is bloating.

Considering that they're artificially inflating prices on ram and ssds, and your pc probably would've cost $300 more with 8 gb more ram, it's hard to defend increasing the ram honestly. Same with ssds, increase them from 256 to 512gb costs like $300, it's insane.

How many years does it take for the swap file to kill an ssd you can't replace?

        Anonymous

For OP's usage it will rarely swap. He'd only have to worry about SSD writes if he were doing a lot of video editing.

apparently my fellow apple gays don't understand either because at 9gbs ram usage barely any of that is compressed

The OS isn't going to waste time compressing RAM if it doesn't need to.

If you have multiple tabs on your web browser, that's multitasking.

Only really need to worry if you are regularly hitting high memory pressure in activity monitor. I've only been able to crash my browser once on 8gb with a ton of other shit open.
So go about your usual stuff and tab into activity monitor's memory use monitoring and see where you are at. It will give you a realistic metric to go off of.

Also suspicious that it has read about as much as it has written. The user is not likely to be transferring such large amounts of data through it like a giant flash drive.

it's swap and it adjusts dynamically vaws on how much ram you have available. mOS cannot use more than 500mb for its normal operations. windows is about 500mb.
