Was I filtered? I honestly don’t get it. Any explanations?

And even when I do get filtered by Pynchon(which is often) I still enjoy the experience of reading his books, but this one was a slog. Am I missing something?

I read it almost a decade ago when I still thought there might be something good in Pomo, All I remember is Metal Gear Solid and Furby being name dropped, unconvincing women, and 9/11 conspiracies. The last point is the only reason the book is still on a bottom shelf, buried behind a second layer of books.

you know how writers have "juvenilia" which is interesting but not considered officially produced by the so-called "author function"? we should maybe make a new category "gerontalia" or something for their crappy old age output too.

We already have the term "Pychon-lite" for all the post AtD (or post M&D if you'd like) works.

well i was also thinking of mccarthy's last book which apparently triggered some ppl because it seemed to do some pandering or delilo who's last book isn't even remembered. without using google do u remember what his last book was? maybe it was good and just didn't get any promotion but i doubt it.

Who was Stella Maris pandering to?

Stella Maris is garbage. Elderly McCarthy mixed up the charm of his early/mid carreer, painting passages with the IDEAS of philosophers he admired, with the midwit trap of MENTIONING the philosophers by name. It's very sad.

"HURR I READ MONTAIGNE IN A NIGHT AND I REMEMBER EVERY WORD" frick off, not even anime is this unbelievable.

Every thalidomide section in "The Passenger"....

I don't think it had anything to do with DeLillo. McC just got out of touch with what's cringey and released something hastily; he knew the end was near. Give the kid a nest-egg, and all.

The Passenger, without the thalidomide sections, is not unredeemable.

Lots of people hate this one but the anons who do like it also like Vineland which filters most and is quite good so I look forward to it. Only Pynchon I have not read.

        >unconvincing women
That is not really a reasonable critique of an author who characters are almost universally unconvincing and mostly just tools of the narrative.

        Irredeemable, my ESL friend.

        What is wrong with 'unreedemable?'

I love vineland, but bleeding edge is pretty bad. maybe don’t get too excited for it so you won’t be disappointed.

It's not a word. Irredeemable is. It's tradition don't you know.

            >It's not a word.
Yes, it is. made it into the OED with usage going back to 1584. It is archaic at this point and fallen out of use but it is a word.

            Anonymous

Browsing the OED a bit more, and it looks like irredeemable might be a corruption of unredeemable. Irredeemable does not come into use until 1609 and irredeemed does not come into use until 1898 while unredeemed goes back to 1526. But who knows, only checked one source.

It's shit and he's a fraud running off the industry boomer plant fumes of Crying Lot (an amusing shitpost at least); the literary equivalent of Big Bang Theory trash serial television serial pastiche.

First edition hardcovers of his releases post Gravity's Rainbow selling for bargain bin prices tell a certain tale.

        >or delilo who's last book isn't even remembered
Delillo may as well be Stephen King-but-less-fun with a marginal prose upgrade, or America's inferior JG Ballard. Mockingbird CIA tastemaking in literature is the most mid abomination ever inflicted upon a nation's arts and letters.

M&D is the Redditfication of Sotweed Factor and the smug donkey faced churl had the audacity to send a copy to him inscribed "been there, done that." If The Flight to Lucifer didn't out Bloom as a literary confidence artist, it ought've been clear with M&D being named as his desert island pick. Frick them both to death, roll over boomers.

I agree with 100% of what you've said and I like you. The only misstep in life is that we both ended up in the Pynchon thread to begin with.

Sometimes the pynchon fanboyism can be a bit too much on here, but you have to at least admit GR is one if the best and most important novels ever.

How did a thread about a pynchon book become a mccarthy and etymology thread? And zero posts about the substance of said book to boot.

      Anonymous

The book's substance was mentioned and we moved on. Pretty simple.

Oh, we forgot Tamogachi, Y2K, the dot com bubble and Pokemon. I'm sure each was mentioned at least five times.

The novel is a Geocities keyword dump, there's nothing else to say about it. Pynchon has always been wise to the reality of three letter organizations but never did anything substantial with them. The period at the end is the one we already got with V, sixty years ago.

Anyone else been reading picrel? Benny,Stencil, and Paola are about to go to Malta. Been enjoying it a lot so far, but I definitely prefer the chapters about the Whole Sick crew over the chapters where V. appears somewhere in history.

My plan is to go from this to TCOL49 (which I’ve read before) to GR. Although I feel like I want to read Mason and Dixon next.
