Having a gf with good taste is definitely cool but it's massively overrated by nerds imo. It's pretty cool especially at the beginning of the relationship but I'd rather date someone chill than someone with "good taste" (according to me) which almost certainly ensures they are a degenerate depressed piece of shit (like me). You don't want a dummy who doesn't read at all but if she's into her own shit that's not to my taste who cares.

Or China has a multi-millennia literary tradition and has only been in extensive contact with the West for a small portion of it in which for it to be translated. There's an extensive amount available in translation, but it's the tip of the iceberg.

            Anonymous

The ratio between how long a tradition has existed and how long it has been in contact with other cultures is a kind of weird way to go, not quite sure what you’re trying to prove there. Even if you only take the last two decades, there is a huge financial incentive to translate books that are gonna blow people away. It hasn’t happened yet. Chinese books just aren’t that good.

Frankly, reading a poem in translation is like kissing a beautiful woman through a veil, as the saying goes. But it's better than nothing. Honestly, though, especially for poems like those that aren't very long I'd suggest looking for multiple translations to compare, so you can at least get some idea of the real meaning. For the first one the title to search is 'jiang cheng zi, su shi' and 'pipa xing'. I'll also share my own translation of the former:
            >For ten years, this abyss between the living and the dead.
            >It's not that I think of you
            >so much as I couldn't forget you if I tried.
            >Your lonely grave a thousand miles away,
            >I have nowhere to talk about my bereavement.
            >Even if we were to meet, I don't suppose we'd recognize each other,
            >my face is covered in dust
            >and my hair is like frost.

            >Last night I dreamed that all of a sudden I was back home
            >and at the window of our little home
            >you were there, combing your hair, doing your makeup.
            >We gaze at each other without words,
            >just a thousand streams of tears.
            >I suppose it'll continue to be a place of heartbreak, year after year
            >under the light of the moon,
            >the hill with the young pine trees.
I confess that I made no attempt to replicate the meter or rhyme scheme, though.

What you call a red flag a real man calls a cry for help.

If your girl has a room, and the room has a bookshelf, and the bookshelf contains books, here's what you do.

    1) While she is lying semi-conscious in post-coital bliss, rise brisky from bed.

    2) Cross to bookshelf.

    3) Sweep all those colour-co-ordinated Rupi Kaur & J.K.Rowling tomes into a large black plastic bag.

    4) Take the bag to the trash.

    5) Put three new books on her shelf. This one...

Some wariness is always appropriate, but the risk, and therefore the level of caution called for, is far higher for women.

So you’re jealous of men who joke about crazy women, bc there’s a incredibly small chance a crazy guy will murder you. And you’re justified in that belief, bc guys needn’t be as weary, as their small chance is somewhat smaller?

Maybe a controversial take, but I like that my wife isn't into literature because it means I can keep it a solitary activity

The women I've dated have all been daddy-issue-ridden goth girls preoccupied with horror and/or psychology, and the woman I married reads almost exclusively feminist-slanted medical science and YA fantasy, but even these aren't absolute red-flags, because they're so far outside my ken that I have no obligation to have an opinion, and so conflict is avoided

Victorian literature. Generally read by middle to upper class liberal c**ts who grew up in a university town or by frumpy women with rich parents. They normally have no clue how privileged they are. It might be a misogynistic period in history, but that gives them all they need to pretend to critique it. They're our feminine pseud counterparts.

Most YA stuff is relatively benign by itself. For me it's neutral. Real flags would be a complete absence of actual authors (and I'm not even particularly demanding on this front) and material that signalled she's got the meme politics of the terminally online.

I don't think I've ever been to a woman's house who had actual books in her shelves outside using old college textbooks as paperweights or book ends for her DVD collection. The only women I know who read at all (less than 10% of them) do it exclusively on their phones or an e-reader, and they read like 80% "romance" porn novels, 10% crime novels about male murderers (another form of porn for women), and 10% general drama and fantasy fiction.

So given that this is what I've observe to be the female norm, I suppose I'd be suspicious of girls who had a book collection at all, or commonly read any kind of books that weren't romance, crime, or fantasy related.

This also isn’t how men interact. The point is that no one, only actual nobodies talk like this. If you claim to be repulsed by this then you hint at being a normal person, but there is no way a normal person would come, stay and post here.
            >100s
You have to be a “different type of normal” to have 100s of photos on instagram and to be able to afford hitting the club every weekend. Few among normals even in the western world can do that. Few have that much money to waste, free weekends to recover, enough egoism to not care about the fiftieth photo of themselves and the same three people.

a lot of women are chronic normies just like a lot of men are, and they think the people who have power are politicians and well-off white people rather than deep state agents, the WEG, ~~*familial wealth serf-owners*~~ and advertisers.

Not actual empowerment, but driven by a drive for empowerment.

          >I genuinely find pieces like 江城子・乙卯正月二十日夜記夢 or 琵琶行 heartrending.
Are there any good translations of these that you'd recommend? I'm interested in getting into chinese poetry

Thanks for the thoughtful reply anon. I know it's obviously very different in the original chinese, but a good amount of the emotions came through in your translation, the last lines in particular. I'll spend some time going through other translations now.

No, it's just the compromise we are forced to make because almost all women believe the insane crap put into their heads by the public education and media complex. What else are we supposed to do? Obviously it is preferable to have a woman that agrees with you, but that's not feasible or realistic as a western man in 2022.

Men can become women and vice versa, homosexuality isn't a mental illness, race isn't real (or race is real and we need to respect those differences, it changes), religion is bad, diversity is good. I don't get it, can you really not identify the state ideology being propagated by media and institutions? You might agree with it or not but don't pretend you can't recognize it.

            Anonymous

            >Men can become women and vice versa
Of course you can't change your biological sex. But some people are strongly distressed by their birth sex for some poorly-understood neurological reason, and human decency calls for us to at least tolerate those people and not harass them.
            >homosexuality isn't a mental illness
What if I think what consenting adults do in their own bedrooms is none of my business one way or the other?
            >race isn't real (or race is real and we need to respect those differences, it changes)
Depends on what you mean by 'race'. Obviously there is genetic variation between humans, but to my understanding it's fairly continuous and hard to draw bright lines in.
            >religion is bad
Honestly, I've been wondering if I'd be happier with religion, but the problem is that rationally I don't see reason to think any of it's true.
            >diversity is good
Diversity in and of itself is not good. Not limiting people's opportunities arbitrarily based on the circumstances of their birth is good, however; even from a purely good-of-society viewpoint that doesn't care about equity to particular individuals, the more people have a chance at education the more scientists and researchers there will be to make useful discoveries.
            >I don't get it, can you really not identify the state ideology being propagated by media and institutions? You might agree with it or not but don't pretend you can't recognize it.
I would have said the primary state ideology is capitalism; that's what the powerful benefit from. The institutions pushing wokeness is primarily a distraction from class struggle, but that doesn't mean human decency doesn't include the concept of not limiting people's opportunities based on their birth- though I'd include the economic dimension in that which so many wokies skip over.

            >The institutions pushing wokism as a distraction for class struggle

You know John Money's attempt to reassign David Reimer as a girl was based on the notion that gender identity (one's self concept as a man or woman) is fully socially malleable, right? The fact that it failed and David ended up identifying as a boy anyway is evidence that there is some innate aspect to gender identity.

He coined a use of 'gender' but that doesn't mean that people who use it today believe the same things he did; again the core belief of modern 'gender ideology' (innate/intrinsic gender identity) is directly contradictory to what he believed.
            >Say, you aren't a woman by any chance, are you?
Yes, but why's it matter? If what I'm saying is true, it would be equally true if a man were saying it, and if what I'm saying is false, it would be equally false if a man were saying it.

Neil Gaiman is a pretty good writer, just an insufferable homosexual politically. Terry Pratchett is okay. I'd lean towards an autism diagnosis in that case but I'd cautiously encourage hitting it in that situation.
