Alrighty then.
Anyone want to share their favorite Weird Fiction book/story?
Pic related.
Brief about pic rel? So far as WF is concerned, few writers up to today equal Hoffmann or even Tieck, but even fewer know this.
Haven't read anything on the genre I think. But I'm looking for something new so entertain me to a small list of entry-level books if you would OP
Classic:
House on the Borderlands - William Hope Hodgson
The Great God Pan - Arthur Machen
The King in Yellow - Robert W. Chambers
The Wendigo - Algernon Blackwood
Newer:
Teatro Grottesco - Thomas Ligotti
A Collapse Of Horses - Brian Evenson
The Imago Sequence - Laird Barron
The Wide, Carnivorous Sky and Other Monstrous Geographies - John Langan
Just some ideas.
People will also say Clarke Ashton Smith, as well as Aickmen for classics.
Many people like The Southern Reach trilogy, by Jeff Vandermeer. I read it but it's so ripped off of ''Roadside Picnic'' I couldn't really get into it.
I forgot to include North American Lake Monsters by Nathan Ballingrud in the newer section, which is also excellent.
I think NALM is the standout from the more recent wave of weird lit. Brian Evenson is also pretty great.
I want to like Laird Barron but his writing is a little corny in a way that I feel the other writers are consciously avoiding.

I think Vandermeer's "Borne" and "Dead Astronauts" are better examples of his weird stuff.
I’m very fond of his ambergris trilogy but it never gets brought up. It’s hard to describe but it’s like a Victorian city full of absurdities and eldritch horrors where the inhabitants are haunted by those little mushroom bastards from dark souls
I really like Ligotti, Chambers and Blackwood. Will check out some of these other picks
Weird fiction is a buzzword
Nobody has ever defined weird fiction
>idude t's horror fiction without gothic horror tropes like ghosts and vampires and werewolves
lovecraft himself considered the gothic stories as weird fiction. and half of all of lovecraft's tales are just pulp gothic horror anyway. the actual """weird""" lovecraft yog sothery stories (not cthulhu mythos as lovecraft never used that term) only make up a small amount of his actual work

how would you define weird fiction? I like Gustav Meyrink, Alfrend Kubin, Philip José Farmer but I don't know if they qualify.

KindleBlack folk should be banned and/or executed on sight. No idea why homosexual jannies allow that shit.
OP here, it's a weird kind of ''blanket'' term that people get really mad and defensive about. I feel like weird is weird.
A lot of sci-fi is ''weird'' but is more focused on taking it seriously, like Leto the 3rd being a giant man-worm in the Dune series isn't all that ''weird'' within the setting.
A lot of fantasy has weird/odd things that are not weird/odd within it's setting, like smearing god shit all over a vehicle to hide it from detection is pretty weird, but within the setting of the book it's in it's not considered weird/odd.
I just go by that rule of thumb.
Hmm yes let me just fill up my home with physical books that take up a square foot per like 5-10 novels instead of owning a compact power efficient device I charge once per month that can hold thousands of books
I think he meant it's not the place to discuss ereaders as they are tech.
Everyone has an ereader now, even if it's just a phone or tablet.
>horror is actually smart guys
Do you think weird fiction is just horror trying to be smart?
I don't think anyone would think that after reading a few of the books. Do you feel it insults you because you don't understand it?
>weird fiction = horror
