Light in august, I'm on the home stretch now and hightower and Christmas are two of the best characters ever wrote, proto-ncfom but with a sea of actual depth, he crafted a living breathing world. I really think he's the most genius writer ever, can anyone tell me someone they think succeeds him please
Read AILD and TSATF but frick oath I'll check out absalom absalom next, was kinda wanting to read more of Melvilles books too so I'll probably do that first. Is sanctuary also worth it? I kinda skipped it
Faulkner wrote Sanctuary for money but it’s still good, but probably not a must read. I think Harold Bloom said it was better than The Sound and the Fury.
It’s about a murderous psychopath and an old man who reminisces about his forefathers’ time.
Something like Child of God or Outer Dark is more Faulknerian though.
Its already been answered for me but yeah Christmas is proto anton even down to the racial ambiguity, they're both in the south, they both turn into police chase stories, they both are told from a multitude of different perspectives. I wouldn't be saying it if their weren't glaring similarities, cormac just went alot more straight forward with it
it's a beautiful book, fantastic romance for so short a read. the only indictment you'll find is from insecure IQfyners who can't fathom the presence of a gay affair.
from what you’ve read of Giovannis Room would you recommend it? I’ve been planning on getting a copy but i’ve eats a few mixed reviews
i'm the one that brought it up. my indictment against it is that the constant air of scandal hanging over everything gets a little tired. i get sick of this woe is me walking calamity who drifts into paris after ruining the lives of allthe bottoms he found in america to play the tragic bohemian. i'll probably still finish it. these characters feel very real and the prose is top notch. i'm bi so don't tell me i can't fathom an affair with a man.
I've fallen for two memes in a row. Just finished reading The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie, it's not as good as I hoped but I persisted to the end just to spite muslims.
Just started reading Woolston's book after seeing it shilled here. OK so far.
I just finished The Ego and Its Own. Now I'm finally getting to Meditations. After that I might read some of the Evelyn Waugh books I bought. I'll probably will start with Black Mischief.
I read about 200 pages, put it down for a while and read a couple lighter books then picked it up again a couple days ago. On page 300 now. A lot of the physics and chemistry is completely over my head but still just plugging away
In the 'tough reading' queue, Breuer& Freud's Studies in Hysteria.
In the 'audio' queue, Design of Everything Things.
In the 'bathtub reading' queue, Lingua Latina.
Not feeling it as much as the other stuff I've read by him but it's alright. That one story about the couple robbing the McDonalds was fun. Also I read that the first story in this is basically the first chapter of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and I should really start on that some time.
I just finished reading Gone with the Wind. It was a nice read but I don't unserstand how people found Scarlett such an attractive figure. Other than her iron will she was an insufferable and deplorable wench. I really 'couldn't give a damn' about her
Bought a collection of short stories from Ray Bradbury. They're hit and miss but I've been wanting to find more books from the pulp era if anyone has recommendation.
Stepped out of my comfort zone and diving into Blood Meridian. Felt physically sick at the end of chapter 4 which is a first time experience while reading.
The castle is good but trails on for longer than needed and literally doesnt have an ending. By the time its over it feels pointless after having already read the trial, which is has unfinished chapters but the ending is there.
pic related. collection of golden-age type crime short stories set in scotland. mostly pretty good, some a bit crappy.
love this series in general, always pick them up when i see them in secondhand bookshops
It's taken me 2 weeks to finish a 128 page book. I read one word at a time, meditating on the author's intent and meaning behind every letter. Sometimes I even meditate on the punctuation.
>I read one word at a time, meditating on the author's intent and meaning behind every letter. Sometimes I even meditate on the punctuation.
I mean meditating on a single line makes sense but every letter? how do you even do that?
Rereading As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. Been having a hard time concentrating on reading these days, but Faulkner is definitely a writer that captivates me and keeps my attention. Just need to get over this reading slump

Have you read other Faulkner books? Go with As I Lay Dying next, then The Sound and the Fury and Absalom, Absalom!

Shut up hillbilly. How the hell is this even similar to ncfom?

Thank you for this. I have the B&N one collecting dust and it has kept me from reading Lovecraft because it's kinda shit
Will probably start another one of John Gardner's James Bond novels (Icebreaker), For Special Services was pretty good goofy fun
This, does it get better? I'm on chapter 4 or 5, very predictable so far, like a teenager wrote it.
Yes it gets way better. I didnt like the first book all that much until a certain "twist" happend. Rest of the series if much better then first one.
Finished the first two books. Really enjoy murakamis surrealist writing. What are you reading, op?
Honestly not sure. I've been flipping between Gypsy Breynton, Giovanni's Room, and The Brigade. None of it is really holding me.

The Great Gatsby is an all time favorite of this board though.

Five Decembers by James Kestrel
Libra by Don Delillo
Don Quixote. It's a slog. Was really enjoying it but these side stories are just killing it.
Persevering is worth it bro
I just finished The Ego and Its Own. Now I'm finally getting to Meditations. After that I might read some of the Evelyn Waugh books I bought. I'll probably will start with Black Mischief.

I'm starting with the greeks - A brief history of ancient Greece
I read about 200 pages, put it down for a while and read a couple lighter books then picked it up again a couple days ago. On page 300 now. A lot of the physics and chemistry is completely over my head but still just plugging away

The sickness unto death
Too many, none have yet to speak to me as the voices in my walls do. For now I merely peruse and consult the oracles of the drywall.
These three.
The Karamazov Brothers, finally bit the bullet, first 100 pages seemed like they were written on purpose to be a pleb filter.

The Castle by Kafka
Pretty good so far. Has some similitudes with The Trial, I don't know which one was written first...
The castle is good but trails on for longer than needed and literally doesnt have an ending. By the time its over it feels pointless after having already read the trial, which is has unfinished chapters but the ending is there.
Dagon and Other Macabre Tales by Lovecraft
Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle
Chuck? Chuck's feed and seed? I don't get it.
1/3 of the way through my ISOLT reread. Reading other shorter books as well but none atm

Marcel Proust's first one of the In search of Lost Time
*farts*
I made it into adulthood without reading Faust so I thought I'd rectify that.
I succumbed to IQfys influence and I began reading Infinite Jest. I'm ~200 pages in and enjoying myself so far.
