when I was 12 I was at a family friend's house & was reading American Psycho in the spare room
I flipped through to the part where he stabs the homeless man and while I was reading it my brother knocked on the slider door from outside & gave me a massive fright
I think the only kind of book that could make me "scared" as a thirty-year-old man would be something that touches on very specific circumstances or fears in my own life. Basically, the threat would have to be real. I'd shit my pants if I was reading something and slowly realized I was reading about myself.

Sibilla Aleramo's 'A Woman' was very moving. I took a break to cry for a few minutes during the last few chapters.
