It's an aesthetic style used to increase their potential for attracting males, by superficially differentiating themselves. Reading is not required for this purpose.

      Explain male goths then

This, and maybe the Romanticist poets

Victorian novels, romantic poets, Poe, obscure mid-century poets, and 80s horror novels. The ones who don't actually read buy Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and say they "read"

Twilight was far too mainstream. If there was any super popular vampire book to read it would be Interview with the Vampire. Or whatever Tim Burton told them to read.

Every goth girl I know now are literal morons who have fried their brain on ketamine and weed. They may read some pop-Wicca books but that's about it.
Although back in the 90s (not to sound like a back in my day gay) goths tended to be more literature than the average person. Reading things like Edgar Allen Poe, Lovecraft, and books referenced by their favourite muscians, for example Burroughs or Bukowski or other writers who tend to pop up in the list of punk/metal muscians favourite authors.

Those "real goths" were the "fake 'goths'" of their time. Even the goths of the 12th century were fake goths.

By dressing to repel most guys and using makeup that repels most guys?

It’s not that outlandish that some girls just like a darker old England type aesthetic. They probably ultimately sacrifice dating value to be a goth…

I doubt that it repels the majority in the modern day, but there are certain aesthetic subcultures that do, and the explanation for that is for them to enter into a small male-dominated environment and superficially adhere to their customs, in order to incease their desirability—i.e. big fish in a small pond.

Mine reads stuff like the virgin suicides, girl interrupted, Dracula, lot of vampire and werewolf "books", Neitzsche, Walden (per my suggestion), lot of true crime and crime fiction any classic literature and prose mixed with some essentially twilight tier stuff and white woman murder content.
