all of the sensors fried with the blast, and his estimate calculating how far pieces of paper he dropped flew was the only one they had for a bit.

Yes, I've heard about it, shame they didn't include it in the movie, I didn't like how they sidetracked Fermi considering his achievements, I mean, he was the reason that they were even at Los Alamos in the first place.

autistic morons, I wasn't the one who made that reply. No one person in the project should be glorified to celebrity level, it was a national level effort and through the power and resources of AMERICA was the bomb born.

The movies was way better than the book and much less of an anti-mccarthyist goyslop than the book. The book deserves to be thrown into the trash for glorifying Oppenheimer too.
Why do people even consider it as an impressive achievement? The bomb was rendered completely useless since the main enemy against whom it should have been used was allowed to steal it just 4 years later.
It's not an impressive achievement by any means, but just because the Soviets got the bomb 4 years later because of Klaus Fuchs and their vast agents network, doesn't mean it was over. USA and USSR tried to constantly tried to one up each other, let it be Teller's hydrogen bomb or even neutron bomb down the line. It was basically about making the bomb more perfect in some way, like causing less damage to own troops, but being more damaging to living tissue in general while having less radioactive pollution afterwards or even just causing bigger damage etc.
It depends from the bomb, but if you ask me, it's all worthless, awful and souless.
I started reading pic related at the beginning of the month. It does spread the credit around a little better to guys like Fermi, Teller and others.
Part of the reason I picked it up was because of Nolan but I was also interested because of Cormac’s The Passenger.
I know that feel atombro, I picked up a book about the development of atomic bombs in USA, USSR and III Reich (which was non-existent there by the way) and it's all because of Nolan. Have you read The Passenger or maybe Stella Maris?
I have read The Passenger but am saving Stella Maris for next year.
Part of Making of the Atomic Bomb does deal with German, Japanese and British attempts to harness the power of atomic fission. And how much the US was helped by emigres trying to escape from anti-Semitic regimes not only in Nazi Germany but also Hungary and Italy.

I am not sure what to make of The Passenger. I have read a couple different interpretations of it namely
1. There is a conspiracy against Bobby by some powerful people in the US intelligence community over the plane he entered and the mysterious passenger
2. There’s no conspiracy. He legitimately owes the IRS money and that’s why his bank accounts and assets have been seized.
3. Three all just coma dreams of a brain dead man
I kind of lean to the last theory but will need to read Stella Maris before making my mind up
Parts of The Passenger I really enjoyed - the bits about New Orleans and Knoxville. The section on the oil rig, the visit to his crazy alcoholic friend in his cabin.
I wasn’t as crazy about the bits with his sister and her hallucinations. (Bobby also hallucinates a visit from the Kid and again it leaves me puzzled how to interpret that. ). I’ll have to give it a re-read after I read Stella Maris. But it was an interesting read on its own.
