I tried to read Ulysses but it was too difficult for me.

I’m vaguely interested in reading it after I read more classics. I have no clue what it’s about. Cracked it at the bookstore and read a random page. Reads like a normal classic novel, but I know it’s packed with references. Is it the references that makes it so appealing? I know it’s a stupid question. Just don’t get it as an outsider.

This is the equivalent of Madonna carrying around Foucault’s Discipline and Punish because she thought it was a bondage manual.

Yeah trying way to hard, you'll just be filtered. Don't just get the books you think will make you look the smartest, attune your picks to what stage you're at, instead of Ulysses pick the portrait and Dubliners, instead of gravitys rainbow pick TCOL49, or even better don't get any of those authors just stick to Russian lit kek

      >instead of Ulysses pick the portrait and Dubliners
those two really doesn't do much jack to prepare you for ulysses and/or finnegans

Extremely basic. Standard stacks of someone who wants to look smart and cultured but is completely incapable of having original thoughts or decisions for themselves so they simply defer to whatever is beloved on an anonymous Cambodian frog hunting forum.

I suggest you hit the books for 3-5 years and try to develop your own taste before you post again

i think that you spend too much time here and base your personality and tastes on IQfy memes

You are going to filter yourself real quick. Instead you should start with 20th century books that seem interesting to YOU, not whatever is the most lauded.
