Are there any great medieval philosophers/ppl who did cool shit and pulled it off who wrote books? I’m grasping at straws here I REALLY don’t want to start with the Greeks
Literally no. Philosophers didn't write during the period between the fall of the western Roman empire and the Renaissance because there wasn't enough light to read by. That's why they call it the dark ages.
Well.. its gona be a long stretch but start with scolaatics. Just have in mind that philosophy is heavily influenced by christianity. If you wn skip that go to Descartes, Hume, Berkley, Spinoza (Rationalists vs Empiricism).
Most coceptions from antics start to be questioned in this period so you will have a good summary of greeks and a good start for modern philosophy.
Almost no one starts with the Scholastics, because it requires deep analysis from the start. People much prefer to start with easier philosophers like Descartes and Kant who create an atmosphere of illusory simplicity, as though they have somehow surmounted the problems faced by the Scholastics, but without ever showing how (the obvious example in Kant is just him always dismissing them out-of-hand as "dogmatists", even though Kant's philosophy at bottom is equally dogmatic because he takes certain facts as given, just as the Scholastics did). I would say start with the Scholastics, but also read them alongside Aristotle and Plato.
medieval Christian philosophers (they continued on into the Renaissance) who were inspired by Aristotle and began constructing a Christian metaphysics based on Aristotilian philosophy rather than the neo-Platonism of Augustine and the early Church Fathers.
Anselm is a good starting point. Aquinas is good too, but he assumes that you have a working knowledge of Aristotle and Plato (and others) so you can get filtered rather quickly if you just jump right into the Summa.
desu, either start with the Bible itself or go with City of God. the scholastics are important, and arguably represent the furthest man has ever gone in philosophy (all Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment philosphers are just neo-Sophists) but they were writing for an audience of classically educated people and that assumption can make it difficult for new readers.
I don’t read a lot but I read Meditations last year and it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I would do about 20 pages per sitting at night before bed and I felt so calm and at peace with myself every time. I was on vacation from work at the time and I remember one night I felt so relaxed and just went and sat in a park at like 1 in the morning in a reflective state. Kino book.
oh bro start with one child rape syndicate not this one. Bro how fricking autistic are you. Like bro I feel like leafy is hear.
DO I HAVE TO LITTERALLY EXPLAIN EVERYTHING TO YOU
“Start with the Greeks” is a humanist meme that began because there was a sense that Greek humanism stood in contrast to Biblical dogma. Should you read the Greco-Roman classics? Yes. Is there any particular reason you have to “start with the Greeks”? No.
NTA, but was it? If so, I never knew that. I guess I take for granted that I have had a pretty comprehensive biblical education growing up, so having to start with bible never occurred to me. Maybe old testament, greek history and philosophy and then new testament, or doing both side by side would be helpful.
idk bro greekoids are kinda souless.
Romans arent really much better.
Its not really about any particular group of people or worldview. Do you understand how unique you really are. How predetermined this all was. you ever seen 2001. what does the black obelisk represent.
are you implying marcus is a greek?
Greek Roman Turkish same thing right? >_<
The Romans, the Greeks, and (maybe) the Turks would all rape you to death for that statement. Whether or not it is true is another story.
>What’s the thing immediately after the Greeks?
The Islamic scientific revolution.
Gimme a name any name to type into Amazon
That was Greek. The library at Alexandria just happened to fall into Muslim hands.

The Bible

Why not the Greeks? there is much to learn from them, by ignoring them you are missing out.
