It's all right I suppose but it's not Crichton's best. Main problem: It has time travel with all the stupid causality paradoxes that entails.
What else would you recommend of this author?
Rising Sun was my favorite.
Ill check it out thanks
Be ready for some dated but very real fears that japan was going to win a cultural and economic supremacy through technology. That was never going to happen for other reasons, but was still legitimate in some regards. If you're a weeb and into city pop optimism of 80s japan, I found it an interesting take on the western view of it and what was driving it.
Crichton is a really good sci-fi author, not especially deep, but will probably get a revival in a few years and recognition as more than an airport novelist.
Nice, thanks
I agree. He’s “pulp” but he does one of the things pulp is best at— the writing is entertaining and exciting, but you also learn things, too.
Has anyone read “Five Patients,” his book about his time working at a hospital before he decided to write novels?
I liked Sphere a lot. It's closest to supernatural.
Farthest from supernatural. Fun but the weeb in me doesn't like the message.
Frick. I need to read some mass market novels again.
Andromeda Strain is OK (some tech is dated but what can you expect?)
Terminal Man is decent I thought.
Rising Sun is OK but doesn't really have any speculative science. A bit of digital video manipulation is all. It's just a corporate thriller plus USA / Japanese culture clash.
Only thing I’ve read is Jurassic Park, I quite enjoyed it.
Different tone and genre from the movies, more of a horror book.
It’s got a great summary of chaos theory, too. I read it in school and the chaos theory stuff was useful in a paper I had to write.
>Jurassic Park
>The Andromeda Strain
>Eaters of the Dead
>Airframe
I grew out of him in 7th grade but I remember liking those ones. Sphere is decent too.
>Sphere is decent too.
The part talking about how aliens wouldn't necessarily be humanoid blew elementary school me's mind.
Sadly it made me hate all sci-fi movies since aliens are always humans with a weird skin color and/or weird hair.
you should try reading Lem and watching Solaris
>Pulp OR quality
Get the frick out.
Shut the hell up Black person
the medieval one where people travel back in time is fun schlock kino. I think it's called timeline. It's the only book i've read of his. I actually read part of his first book "a case of need" I think it's called. Its kind of funny because it is all based around his hospital experience. elites getting abortions under the guise of a "dilation and cutterage". An interesting real life glimpse.
I look forward to reading more of his books.

It’s crazy that this dude died over a decade ago since it still “feels” like he’s around making new stuff.
Pretty curious he also created the tv show ER
Oh cool, never knew that. interesting persona if you ask me, he had to be close to Hollywood yet rather write books than try to get into industry
it's like a TV-movie but in book form
i gonna borrow it to my mom when i finish then
