The Sound of Waves is his only really good book imo.
I always forget what Sound of the Waves is about, but upon recalling it, a smile is brought to my lips. It's a surprisingly pleasant story about the clash between rural, masculine traditionalism and the trappings of modernism's advances. Especially coming from Mishima, it was quite surprising that the story just plays out like a normal love story, and no big tragedy occurs. This enhances the experience, mind you.
I never read any traditionalism vs modernism into that story. It a romance story and a coming of age novel with a comfy setting. The inspiration was Daphnis and Chloe.
I don't know but I read The Sailor who Fell from Grace with the Sea a couple weeks ago and it was amazing. If you haven't yet, you should absolutely read it
Few of his non-fiction essays were translated, but "On the Defense of Culture" is one of them. https://masakijinzaburo.substack.com/p/on-the-defense-of-culture-by-yukio
I am midway through Temple of Dawn and I care for it much less than the first two. The princess isn't anywhere near as compelling as Kiyoaki or Isao and I'm not that interested in Buddhist theology as Mishima wants me to be to sit through this exposition.

No it is not, he was a short asian.
Even worse once you realize he was a skinny manlet.
He wrote 34 novels. I don't think anyone here has read even half of them.
The Sound of Waves is his only really good book imo.
Have you really read all his 34 books?
Nope.
Then how do you figure it's his only good book?
>he doesn't know
I accept your retraction
I suppose it’s an educated guess.
You don’t need to read all his books to know that. Say you read 4 of his books and three of them suck, it’s safe to assume all the rest suck too.
Doesn't apply to Steven King
