what makes it superior to gentoo? i'll tell you. it has 0 Black folk.

there's many Black folk who've installed gentoo. while there's no Black folk who've managed to install nixos.

Being able to roll back when shit breaks.
Being able to have different system specializations that you can switch between (no I won't describe it, look it up)
Being able to save your entire system configuration in a Git repo and have it be 100% reproducible
Being able to access over 80k packages (picrel mogs even AUR)

        And most importantly:
Being able to access a community that filters out the stupid Gentoo/Arch tutorial users that learn how to partition and mount a drive and think that makes them "Expert Linux Users" when they don't actually know even the basics of how their OS works.

Honestly that last part is pretty dope. Whenever I went to the Gentoo or Arch forums it would just be a huge bombardment of things like "WAAAH I SET UP LUKS AND I CAN'T LOGIN ANYMORE HELP ME I NEED THIS NOW" but the NixOS chat is more like "Yo, why isn't this overrideAttr working on this package" and then K900 says "Here's the exact fricking thing you need to fix this in your system immediately. I've created an MR that patches it here and it will be available in nixpkgs-unstable without a patch in 6 hours from now"

God I fricking love the NixOS community. I really hope it doesn't get flooded with the Arch/Gentoo users.

          >Being able to save your entire system configuration in a Git repo and have it be 100% reproducible
i dont see the point unless youre reinstalling your system everyday or using it to setup on 1000 other cumputers
          >Being able to access over 80k packages
dont care. gentoo repo has all the packages i care about. plus i get the customizability of portage. plus its incredibly easy to patch packages or create your own local repository(both of which nixos can do anyway)
          >Being able to access a community that filters out the stupid Gentoo/Arch tutorial users that learn how to partition and mount a drive and think that makes them "Expert Linux Users" when they don't actually know even the basics of how their OS works
ironic considering learning nix language doesnt make you any better anyway. youre living in a world of delusions.
Everything youve mentioned except a single point(which most users dont really care about) has been very superficial.

That's because your "points" can be basically summarized with "Okay, but I don't care about anything" and honestly that kind of ironically is what I absolutely hate about the Arch/Gentoo communities to begin with.

Instead of prioritizing reproducible builds they went for binary support.
Gentoo smells like glowies these days.

      Anonymous

Gentoo doesn't need to do anything special to make reproducible builds work. Just set your CFLAGS right.

You may need to apply whatever patches Debian is applying too but at the end of the day when you control your toolchain then it does not matter if binaries don't always contain the same bit-for-bit identical output.

If you're concerned about a piece of software then you probably shouldn't be compiling it in the first place. The ability to reproduce its binary isn't going to help you.

          Anonymous

You can reproduce it (use the same CFLAGS to unsure a reproducible build and apply any necessary patches), the question is why do you need to?

Other reproducible distros aren't actually reproducible anyway. They lie to you. None of them are 100% reproducible.

The fact that it's nothing but a waste of time.

I did install Gentoo multiple times in the past before I realized it and gave up on it for good. Never looked back. Ironically, most people nowadays who insist on "installing Gentoo" only do so from at least a stage3 tarball, which is far less time-consuming than the OG stage1 install. It's clear that Gentoo developers, while not smart enough to realize that the installation process can be automated, at least were smart enough to realize that bootstrapping so much stuff is pointless.

Unless you have unusual hardware and very specific software needs, don't bother with Gentoo and stick to a simple binary-based distribution. You can still compile from source when and if you need it.

      Anonymous

      >you can still compile from source when and if you need it
One should be able to easily add their own local repositories of software, preferably have the build process be containerized for easier reproduction, be able to install from the repos as if they're binary repos.
Then you can literally add anything missing from the official repos. You say "if", but the time always comes when it comes to "when" if you're a developer (one of the groups actually benefiting most from running a linux distro instead of windows).

If you use the binary package updates then you don't need to.

If you have a good CPU though then package updates hardly take all day to compile outside of a few really heavy packages.
