The way we assess what is valuable and what isn’t or what is impressive and what is shameful is very socially determined.
But success in life doesn't have that strong a correlation with intelligence. Being born into the right situation at the right time or even mere dumb luck play into it a lot more than intelligence - there are incomparably more rich, upper-class dumbass kids than there are self-made billionaire geniuses.

Sexual selection is crazy and we still don't have a strong theory on how it works. Look at the birds outside and tell me that the males screaming their heads off while being brightly colored isn't both the most beautiful and most moronic thing you've seen. Natural selection keeps sexual selection in check through predation and other means, but remove some of that predation, as is the case in New Guinea, and you get male birds that look like this. Likewise, with humans facing less natural selective pressure, sexual selection is free to drive us toward increasingly bizarre and potentially detrimental physical forms and ways of courtship. Women may not be attracted to intelligence, but they rarely marry a man who is less intelligent than them. And as they get older this becomes more and more important. A teenager might be okay with a dumbass hunk, but very few women older than that will consider one as a possible long-term mate. It's all part of making sure there is someone there to provide for them and/or any kids they may end up having. Most women probably are not aware of this consciously, but it definitely drives them subconsciously.
