Damn, good answer. But did this book turn to shit after the first half or did I lose interest? It reads like the author forgot about it for several years then wrote the second half with a completely different objective.
Not really a book but a graphic novel.
Japanese lesbian spends 3 books trying to prove to herself, her parents and the reader that she's in fact actually a lesbian 100% no doubt about it while also lamenting about every aspect of life imaginable. Just basically misery porn but not fictional because it's autobiography
My dad had me read Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther in 6th grade. The book is a memoir by a dad about his son who is dying of brain cancer in the 40's. This book made me cry so much.
Supposedly The Blind Owl (which was legendary for inducing suicides, including that of the author) but I don't speak Farsi and the translation didn't really have that much of an impact on me
These 3 unsettled me for some reason and I’ve had no issue with disturbing books. There was just an ominous foreboding depression lurking through them that bothered me for some strange reason
A Child Called It
King Lear.
>What is the most miserable, depressing book of all time?
The Holy Bible
>What is the most cheerful, inspiring book of all time?
The Holy Bible

I haven't read a lot of depressing books but Jude the Obscure was the most depressing I have read
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.
King Lear is a great answer, Othello also deserves a mention.
For nonfiction, Tombstone by Yang Jisheng
This book would be kinda comfy if not for the creepy baby.
