I'm not sure if I'd consider him a good writer but he has at least one very good book while that is a fricking slog.

I find it quite funny how Puzo's last book was apparently so bad that critics outright assumed that he didn't even write it.

    To Have and Have Not

There’s some good parts but there’s a monologue by a female character that’s the cringiest fricking thing I ever read

Never liked A Modest Proposal but I’m sure Swift is a good writer regardless

the worst book I've ever partially read was "only revolutions" by the guy who wrote house of leaves
not that Markie D's an amazing author in the first place, but this book was unreadable. like someone trying to one-up Finnegan's Wake without any substance

I hated Despair. In fact, I didn't like The Defense much either but I can acknowledge the quality of The Defense more than I could Despair. Nabokov really hit it out of the park with e-girlta but the "pretentious unlikeable character does thing but with beautiful prose" is only tolerable when there's dicky

If you thought that was bad, try Islands in the Stream

He apparently went on to write some good books, but this one was really bad. Telling rather than showing, hopping heads between paragraphs, and a major asspull in the middle of the book (i.e. the "feral scream").

The Dune sequels, holy shit what a way to ruin a good first book that would be great to stand on its own. Reminds me of the Star Wars prequels ruining the original movies where they could've stood on their own too.

James Ellroy's latest books have not been that great. It's a shame, since he's fully able to write great novels
