Nabokov really hit it out of the park with e-girlta but the "pretentious unlikeable character does thing but with beautiful prose" is only tolerable when there's dicky
He apparently went on to write some good books, but this one was really bad. Telling rather than showing, hopping heads between paragraphs, and a major asspull in the middle of the book (i.e. the "feral scream").
The Dune sequels, holy shit what a way to ruin a good first book that would be great to stand on its own. Reminds me of the Star Wars prequels ruining the original movies where they could've stood on their own too.

I find it quite funny how Puzo's last book was apparently so bad that critics outright assumed that he didn't even write it.
