Neo was Jesus, logically he used TempleOS.

Neo from The Matrix might prefer using a Linux distribution like Arch Linux due to its customizable nature and focus on simplicity, allowing him to have full control over his system. He would likely choose a programming language like Python for its versatility, clean syntax, and large libraries that could help him navigate the digital world of the Matrix.

He obviously knows Assembly and C and uses them to reverse engineer the matrix, but in his day to day he writes scripts on Bash, Lisp or Lua. Undecided on whether he runs Arch, Gentoo, Void, BSD or Plan 9.

It's 1999. Arch, Gentoo, Void and TempleOS don't exist yet.

He's a 90's hacker so mainly C, Assembly and probably Perl for scripting. I have a hunch feeling he's a FreeBSD user; his main PC gives off a UNIX oriented GUI so either Linux or BSD, doubt he'd be using commerical UNIX. Zoomers will never know feel of experiencing the aesthetics of early 2000's Matrix themed hacker angelfire sites.

His documents say he was born in 1962 (2 years older than IRL Keanu Reeves). He would have gone to college in the 80s and learned either Unix or BSD, so Linux or Free BSD would be the natural move for him later. He probably learned DOS for running his own BBS, which then helped him get his boring corporate day job.
He would have also experienced the peak years of Usenet, honing his 1337 5|<|115 with older hackers who were used to working on the bare metal. Probably knew a few phreakers too. He was 31 when September stopped ending.
The most disturbing thing is that everyone he meets has a lame AOL screen name. The first are integral to the plot (Choix and Dujour - choice of the day), but then he meets Trinity, Morpheus, Dozer, Cypher and even a fricking Tank. The real hidden plot is that Usenet was his real world and he's been trapped in a fake world since 1993.

well if we look at the screen shot from the movie we can begin eliminating OSs right away
you can see there are definitely windows in the screen, so it's definitely a GUI compatible operating system, it's not windows because windows never had widgets even close to resembling that
it's not macos because it doesn't have that homosexual little bar at the top
it could be some modification of a modular operating system, thus making it nearly impossible to know which actual kernal/distro he was using, however the DE is clearly some custom job resembling many environments available at the time, provided you could access the source and customize them, like window maker
most likely however is it's a custom window manager he wrote, along with his fancy search program, so he could be maximum hacker

      >modification of a modular operating system
      >custom window manager he wrote
By 1999 he's 37, depressed and living alone in a studio apartment (even though people pay him $2000 for something that fits on a minidisc). All his UI is likely stuff he collaborated on with about 5 other people 8 years ago. He keeps it around, because he doesn't want to forget the good times.

Good detail but I do like their names. It seems a lot of old hacker names were something that D&D nerds came up with. "The Gatekeeper", "Dark Wizard", "Shadow Blade" etc - still cool though - there's a good source from textfiles.com/hacking - some of them sound like digital pirates or really from a digital wild west. It looked so fun to be around in the hacking scene back then, almost a completely different world.

I apologize for my earlier response and any offense that it may have caused, on reflection it's clear that Neo would more likely use a powerful language like C++ to manipulate The Matrix given its low-level system access and efficiency.

This is quite the autistic take anon, you do realize most of the time the operating systems on devices are completely made up and non-sensical, right?
