As far as I know, it involved at least two Chinese guys, a Russian and an American who all put claims on Perelman's proof. 2. Perelman was not happy at all with the idea that you should be awared a prize and money for discovering a mathematical proof. 3. Also Perelman rightly called out academic mathematics as an institution full of corrupt, insincere people with a nepotism problem.

No, perelman's proof is based on Richard Hamilton's theory of Ricci Flow. Richard Hamilton already is able to prove the poincare conjecture for most cases, the only exception is the so called " the cigar soliton" case. Perelman's proof is for this "cigar solition" case.
