no, what the frick are these prizes? all accepting a "prize" does is give unearned respect by proxy to a bureaucracy of managerial morons who add no value to math or to anything else.

The guy rejected it because of the issues that 1. a bunch of other professional mathematicians pretended that the proof Perelman came up with was actually their work. As far as I know, it involved at least two Chinese guys, a Russian and an American who all put claims on Perelman's proof. 2. Perelman was not happy at all with the idea that you should be awared a prize and money for discovering a mathematical proof. 3. Also Perelman rightly called out academic mathematics as an institution full of corrupt, insincere people with a nepotism problem.

May Perelman enlighten us in the future. Meanwhile, he will enjoy eating oranges and collecting mushrooms.

I think you get right and you can progress in Poincare Conjecture dealing with very big woman boobs.

no, it's because Richard Hamilton came up with 50% of the proof of the Poincare Conjecture. Just because you finished the last step, doesn't mean you should get all the recognition

Didn't Perelman develop his version of the proof on his own, without the help of academia?

          https://www.quora.com/Why-didnt-Hamilton-solve-the-Poincare-conjecture

No, perelman's proof is based on Richard Hamilton's theory of Ricci Flow. Richard Hamilton already is able to prove the poincare conjecture for most cases, the only exception is the so called " the cigar soliton" case. Perelman's proof is for this "cigar solition" case.

I also heard a rumour about the Russian mob's presence influencing his decision to reject the money. Any truth to that?

That was just some fake bait I posted a few years back. Nothing to it at all.

Not taking money out of some ebin principle is moronic. Imagine if someone you cared about ended up needing urgent help and you didn't have the resources to help them.

Anything can be justified with enough hypotheticals thrown at it.

Imagine if someone you cared about knew that you has a lot of money so they decided to ruin their relationship with you by lying about some made up problem as a ruse to demand money from you.
Imagine if everyone knew that you had a lot of money and it was impossible to form an honest, trusting relationship with anyone because they were all constantly trying to trick you out of your money, otherwise manipulate you into giving out free gibes or just outright demanding it.
why do you imagine yourself flamboyantly giving away your millions in order to be the savior of some suffering acquaintance anyway, do you make a habit of wishing suffering on others in order to allow you the opportunity to cultivate a reputation for generosity?

Imagine if two people you cared about would be endangered unless you didn't take the money. Now what?

It isn’t about the money. It’s about sending a message.
