they indeed smoked weed, and opium, as proved by burials, a pipe found with traces of both, iirc

      >After the burial the Scythians cleanse themselves as I will show; they anoint and wash their heads; as for their bodies, they set up three poles leaning together to a point and cover these over with woollen rugs; then, in the place so enclosed to the best of their power, they make a pit in the centre beneath the poles and the rugs and throw red‑hot stones into it.
      >They have hemp growing in their country, very like flax, save that the hemp is by much the thicker and taller. This grows both of itself and also by their sowing, and of it the Thracians even make garments which are very like linen; nor could any, save he were a past master in hemp, know whether they be hempen or linen; whoever has never yet seen hemp will think the garment to be linen.
      >The Scythians then take the seed of this hemp and, creeping under the rugs, they throw it p275 on the red‑hot stones; and, being so thrown, it smoulders and sends forth so much steam that no Greek vapour-bath could surpass it. The Scythians howl in joy for the vapour-bath. This serves them instead of bathing, for scarce ever do they wash their bodies with water. But their women grind with a rough stone cypress and cedar and frankincense wood, pouring water also thereon, and with the thick stuff so ground they anoint all their bodies and faces, whereby not only does a fragrant scent abide upon them, but when on the second day they take off the ointment their skin becomes clean and shining.

Sounds… practical? Do you think some details are exaggerated to give a negative view of the schthians?

You mean the not washing themselves with water part? Could very well be inaccurate, but who knows. The hemp sweatlodge was probably more of a ritual (and to get high) than for cleaning. They did find some of the tripods with bowls containing stones and hemp seeds too, so that description is verified. The women making an ointment like that seems very realistic too.

Herodotus is good reading. Unique source for so much of that time.

Did Scythians actually dress with fashion this good? If yes do you know of any reenactor who used clothes like these in their craft?

They had to kill three men before losing their virginity.

    >Their women mount on horseback, use the bow, and throw the javelin from their horses, and fight with their enemies as long as they are virgins; and they do not lay aside their virginity until they kill three of their enemies, nor have any connection with men until they perform the sacrifices according to law. Whoever takes to herself a husband, gives up riding on horseback unless the necessity of a general expedition obliges her.

iirc, that was the amazons alone, aka, the tribe of the sauromatae that intermarried with them

I have heard that when a traveller from Abysinnia visited the Scythians, all the men went sexless for 2 years until he left.

    a shot in the dark
based on their customs of expelling their teenagers from the tribe as adulthood passage rite, with them forming some kind of wolf pack, I'd say plenty of kidnapping of other women happened
the similarities between mongols and scythians, to speak broadly, also supports the kidnapping
but I also guess they weren't fools and the had secs in their early teen years before they got expelled

Real life Scythians were psychopaths drinking from human skulls and making clothes from human skin.

they were raiders, their skull cups were the equivalent to drinking out of a gold cup, in fact, they had some skull cups covered in gold
about the skull cups, they made them off the skulls of worthy oponents they killed, not random people
about clothes made from human skin, first time hearing it, which makes me doubt it

        Herodotus.

        >for he who has most scalps for hand towels is judged the best man. Many Scythians even make garments to wear out of these scalps, sewing them together like coats of skin.

        >Many too take off the skin, nails and all, from their dead enemies' right hands, and make coverings for their quivers;the human skin was, as it turned out, thick and shining, the brightest and whitest skin of all, one might say. Many flay the skin from the whole body, too, and carry it about on horseback stretched on a wooden frame.

          Confirmed.

Human and animal skin identified by palaeoproteomics in Scythian leather objects from Ukraine

          > The surprise discovery is the presence of two human skin samples, which for the first time provide direct evidence of the ancient Greek historian Herodotus’ claim that Scythians used the skin of their dead enemies to manufacture leather trophy items, such as quiver covers.

also the skull cups were made ou of the top part of the skull carefully cut, so it had no nose, eyes or teeth on it, a mere bowl
