I am getting ready for boatlife and have been paring my library down to boat size for the past few years, its tough, gotten rid of thousands of books so far, down to about 500 but still too many. Maybe later I will post some pics of the books which will absolutely go with me.

Power generation on a small sailboat (under 50' or so) is troublesome to say the least. You can't rely on solar unless you live at anchor since the panels will often be in the shadow of the sails and you are very limited on the number of panels and their location, they need to be mounted in a way that waves will not rip them off and they will not catch the wind and act like a sail or interfere with the operation of the boat. Solar generally will only provide enough power to keep the important stuff running in the tropics. Wind generation only really works if you are in the trade winds, self lock if winds get to high to prevent overheating and are also affected by the sails which can shield them from the wind resulting in no power. They also are obnoxious, the transmissions buzz at higher speeds, on a boat they require a transmission to make up for the small blade size which sailboats demand. I don't want to have to run the engine to charge the batteries just so I can read, that fuel is more important than that and can mean the difference between life and death. Running the engine is also annoying, big diesel running pretty much in your home.
        >but the battery lasts for weeks!
Sure if you only read for 30 minutes a day.

More importantly, consumer electronics are not really made to handle marine environments, even most of the supposed waterproof ones, salt air gets into everything. Fine if you spend most of your time at anchor or in the marina but if not the salt gets in and causes corrosion and failure. Marine electronics are two or three times the price of consumer electronics for a reason, they are designed to deal with all that salt.
