I once pulled a HDD out of a broken laptop that had personal data on it.
If I wanted I could have easily done some funny stuff with that.

It was full of hardcore gay porn.

      Gonna KMS because I remembered.

I think one of the pictures had their full legal name and Citizen service number in full view.
I ended up formatting the drive.
Think I either ended up destroying it and throwing it out or ended up using it for some desktop.

No porn on the one I salvaged.
          Lots of private pictures.
          Sadly nothing spicy.

I replaced the logic board on an HDD I bought from some Asian c**t from Yale Univ., but, I can't seem to get it to work. Won't format or zero-write. But it's recognized in Linux. It clicks and makes weird noises, but, I'm hoping it's salvageable to some degree

i buy only used hard drives
first thing I do is format it and run cipher /w (overwrites whole empty space with 0, then 1, then random)

why would you bother, just format and use the drive.
I buy a lot of used PCs and found stuff from dudes fricking horses to some German and his gay son marrying some much older dude.
Could have made some memes for /misc/ but even I'm not that much of a shit.

I don't think running test disk or recuva in my teenage years is anything groundbreaking lol, I just clicked a few buttons and looked at some breasts. after a good fap fixed their shit, usually backup all their files to a thumb drive and did a fresh winblows install since it was 9/10 malware or Norton/mcafee shitting up the place

im glad mobile phones/tablets have largely replaced computers for 80% of people. hard to frick up a mobile OS with training wheels but those phishing emails/text still get these gullible fricks lol

I once went to a shop selling used electronic goods such as hifi systems, laptops and the like. Bunch of random crap really. Ran by an arab guy. Shit you not the guy didn't even bother to wipe any of the HDD's, the laptop i got had some shit on it from some woman who was about to become insolvent and begged the loansharks to delay having her shit seized, that's probably why she sold that laptop. This was back in 2010

      Probably many like that.
My dad lost his company around 2009.
Sharks are still trying to exploit him. Not just banks, things like professionals like GPs and doctors too.
The whole economy is a shark tank now. Sharks devouring sharks.

And his business wasn't clean either, he was often bad with his apprentices. They hated him.

I bought a craigslist laptop from a guy about a hundred miles north of me, he had factory reset it before sale. I ran recuva on it and found pictures from a road trip they had taken in an rv, where they picked up random hitchhikers and buttfricked them, and there were also some videos of guys injecting saline into their scrotums, puffing them up like balloons, like larger than grapefruits. There were no faces in those videos though, may not have been the guy I met. While talking to him at the point of sale, he asked me where I was from and mentioned he was thinking about taking a trip down that way. I didn't realize it until later obviously, but he was offering to drive down and buttfrick me.

The experience of finding his gross gay shit pretty much cured me of wanting to look through strangers' hard drives, for what that's worth to you OP.

First, this has been done many times over. Second, this could fall under "unauthorized access to data" at some point

There are programs you can use to permanently erase data.
It overwrites the data with random bits.

At one point I had a floppy disk with bootable OS that do this and is suggested going 3 passes, but then there's another option that says it's government approved that does 7 passes. I'm sure there are tools you can download somewhere that will do the same that run off a thumb drive, but given the environment we're living in you can never be 100% sure it's not backdoored and simply googling for it may put you on a list.

one time a friend of mine got some ex-hospital PCs that were full of patient data, including ids, pictures, medical info, etc. Decided to just delete it all cus he's a nice guy. Still have one of those as my living room PC.

i'm a brainlet, somebody explain how the frick data recovery works. if i have a 1tb drive, that has 100gb of shit i don't want anybody to see, and say, 800gb of innocent shit.
i then wipe the drive, and fill it up to capacity with random stuff. then wipe it again.
how the frick can you recover the old data without the drive miraculously being 2tb now, since it still has all of the old data accessible

      Anonymous

Deleting a file just marks that part of the HDD as empty allowing it to be overwritten.
Data recovery can only work if it's not been overwritten yet.
Just hitting delete isn't enough to properly delete the file.

download active killdisk, it has a very easy to use gui that non tech savvy folks can figure out and it will wipe all data from the disk

Nothing, I did that many times.
I was not really into stealing info tho you could probably do that, I had scans of passports and what not but more into personal stuff.
What I managed to get is diary of overweight teen girl and her chats, lots of sexual frustration and daydreaming there, correspondence of girl in her 20s with her mom about her relationship with boyfriend which resulted in abortion (all medical documents where included). So all in all almost nothing interesting despite going through 20+ drives. Most people are boring as frick, their photos are pure depressing trash... it ain't worth it.

How many phones have you traded in?
Surely you wiped those things squeaky clean right?
The phone company definitely wouldn't want any of that sweet succulent data hidden inside your old phone.
