On iOS its Reeder 5 for me, worth every cent. Even supports FreshRSS.
On Linux I use newsboat, also supports FreshRSS.

I have a server, is freshrss just to centralize your feeds? If so could I just use a list as well?

Its centralizes feeds/subscription management and syncs „metadata“ like what posts I already have read.

I thought Reeder 4 (or whatever that was the last free version) was very slick but after starting to use NetNewsWire I haven’t looked back. It also syncs via iCloud so it’s very convenient to read my feeds on my Mac, iPad or iPhone. And the Teletext theme is just so good.

I just run CommaFeed locally. It's Java, but has the best UI of all the self-hosted RSS readers. Miniflux is OK as well, but UI is worse.
