This comes from the word "adelphoi" which is used by Paul elsewhere in the New Testament to refer to 500 Christians, so you'd have to believe Mary had 500+ kids for that interpretation to work. Early Christians called each other "brother" the way monks do and even Lucian, a pagan, talks about this while he describes the early Christians.
