What's The Deal With Cosmic Desktop? Hype or New Standard?

Why is System76 re-inventing the wheel? We already have GTK and QT even though they might not be free, they work fine. We already have gnome, which works just fine too. What's with all the hype?

Should've just ditched GAYNOME and used KDE Plasma instead.

      Because why not
      > We already have GTK and QT even though they might not be free, they work fine.
They are free, both of them. But they don't work fine for them.
      > We already have gnome, which works just fine too. What's with all the hype?
not fine enough for them. They want tiling and developers that are not up their own arse.

      No because its C++

Honestly nobody knows, especially since they are just re-creating GNOME except with way less features.

      >it has a top bar and CSD so its basically gnome.
      you ever used GNOME?

C++ is why it krashes. Cosmic is using Rust for good reason.

Plasma is too unstable and other DEs are too old and clunky. Let’s see how COSMIC works out

I used it with NVIDIA graphics and it worked fine though. Probably easier to better it than writing an entire new thing from scratch which will take many years to even become usable.

      >less features
Kind of dumb to say that when the DE is only just about to get an alpha release. Having watched the interview Brodie had it's plainly obvious they're aiming to to provide something much more like KDE than GNOME.

What makes it a GNOME “””clone”””?

You can improve Gnome massively with even a minimal amount of tweaks. I use a WM but I'd imagine they're just doing some basic stuff and it's still way better.

alpha will be available in in the next release of pop_OS i think.
From then onwards its unknown how much time it will take to reach stable.

They get donations just for Pop!OS so they have more than enough to pay for devs to do this for their own products.

Literally nobody likes Gnome. The only reason anyone bothers with it is because they think KDE still krashes every five seconds.

    >Why is System76 re-inventing the wheel?
Check out this on IQfy's wiki: https://wiki.installgentoo.com/wiki/Emmanuele_Bassi#Pop.21_OS.2FSystem76_fight
It started with System76 rightfully calling out Gnome during the transition from Gnome 3/GTK3 to Gnome 40/GTK4. Gnome devs as usual made breaking changes that lead to their ecosystem being more restrictive. Gnome wontfixed System76 which lead to them breaking away from both GTK and Gnome to make their own desktop environment.

cosmic looks way nicer than the bloated old looking shit like kde and this is their first alpha

    >Why is System76 re-inventing the wheel?
maintaining their extensions on GNOME took too much time, since no stable API
they wanted to build a proper DE, and decided that GNOME wasn't the best pick for the base anymore
also they already have a team of rust devs

written in rust to generate as much hype as possible and attract as much troons as possible too. It just looks like gnome written in rust.

        what resources are they wasting?
        yours?
they can afford to pay devs to make a distro so let them do it.
it seems to be worth it to their hardware

          >what resources are they wasting?
Everyone's. They're already piggybacking on tons of people's work just by virtue of using Ubuntu as a base, and giving a meme DE that'll never get ready or be usable
          >they can afford to pay devs
But can they afford fixing all the bugs once users start filling their bug tracker?
          >make a distro
Except they don't, it's just a run-of-the-mill Shitbuntu derivative which only adds bugs

it is nearly ready for alpha, anon. take your meds.

            >But can they afford fixing all the bugs once users start filling their bug tracker?
            that's what paying devs does

            >Except they don't, it's just a run-of-the-mill Shitbuntu derivative which only adds bugs
they removed the buggy shit known as gnome so that is progress

        > Let's waste a frickton of resources writing a new DE from scratch
We're talking about the GNOME organization, right?

The organization that is responsible for the filepicker thumbnail meme?
The organization that constantly rejects merge requests from outsiders?
The organization that constantly removes features and breaks API compatibility?
The "What's the use case?" organization?

Yea, it's a wonder why PopOS stopped submitting feature requests to them and made their own DE.

          >Yea, it's a wonder why PopOS stopped submitting feature requests to them and made their own DE.
The funny thing is that when COSMIC was announced, things like the file picker meme suddenly got fixed and features started rolling in faster. They know COSMIC is going to take their users.

What cosmic cope is this? If anything, redditors were malding over QtWidgets being too complete and lacking a roadmap. It doesn't have to be rewritten with half the featureset culled every 2 years to entertain ebassi.

I guess they want to be ahead of the curve by making a desktop environment written in rust.
I don't know where they have drawn the line but it is ambitious and I like it.
This kind of enterprise has long died in the land of Linux and this is a good alternative to the current smattering of choices. Pity Unity died out. Mark was not as based as I hoped he was.
