Why is GNOME the default DE for so many distros? Literally every single part of it is broken. It's not that that there are better alternatives, it's that almost EVERY alternative is better.
Because it's was the only freesoftware DE. KDE was proprietary. So basically it has stayed the standard. Gnome is also more stable than any DE. and it is more up to date and heavily maintained.
People are more afraid of getting sued by Microsoft than they are concerned about quality. Same reason font rendering only became good on Linux in recent years.
GNOME's file picker issue is 18 years old. When Windows 98 was released with thumbnails in the file picker, Windows was 13 years old (Windows 1.0 was released in 1985)
In other words, Microsoft engineers added a file picker with thumbnails in 13 years, ~25 years ago, while GNOME trannies have made 0 (ZERO) progress in the last 18 (24) years.
GNOME was released in 1999, before some of you were even born, and Windows had thumbnails in the file picker a whole year earlier.

>Unfinished hack rotting in the AUR
Not fully working and completed, try again. It needs to be in the form of a completed merge request to the gtk git.
Why are you pretending that this is some Herculean task that no one is capable of doing? Several other toolkits/DEs have this feature, so clearly it isn't impossible to implement.

can't verify because I use kde
I thought opensuse had one too but I can't find it

then why don't you send in a pull request with it fixed up 🙂

By your standard none of GNOME is "fully working and completed".

And you want to make it worse by merging more broken patches, why?
First off, I am a GNOME developer speaking anonymously. I will not prove this. I will not give you a hint. But this is why we don't give a shit.
SECOND OFF
Listen, you dont need grid thumbnails, you need to stop being a moron. The vast majority of users would like thumbnails, but they do not need them, and they do not need the release delays and bugs from trying to redo the file picker like this creating entirely new widgets and everything. What you get is the name, the mtime, the size, and type, all of which you can sort by, and SMALL thumbnails that are perfectly usable for most people looking through a photo collection. Update your screenshot homosexual, we have thumbnails in list view. SO HOW DO I TELL WHICH PICTURE IS WHICH, MAYHAPS? You organize your photos. You give them names. You give the folders names. And now you can find pretty much any file way faster than you would scrolling through a grid of 10000 thumbnails named things like 123843042341-0.jpg in ~/Shitposts. Most of the time I know where something is based on the modification time and size alone. For large collections like personal photographs they are all in folders and the filenames are timestamps. And, I, AND MOST PEOPLE, do not go through looking for just one in a file picker, because I, AND MOST PEOPLE, upload whole batches to social media at once instead of picking them one at a time for FRICKING IQfy.
In other words, this does not affect most users, it affects FOUR-CHAN USERS not GNOME USERS so it is not a GNOME PRIORITY. 99% of people do not notice or care. If you think it is that great patch it yourself but the only people clamoring for this are on reddit (IQfy users off the clock) and IQfy (reddit users waiting out bans).
One thing that puzzles me about this is you'd think if gnome are so good at stealing ideas from osx, why on earth did they completely skimo out on the file picker with barely any customization, shit thumbnails, and not even any kind of quicklook functionality?
>18 years
fippybippy
17 years
Reminder that IQfy will never implement thumbnails either
you're correct but I'm going to spend the next 20 minutes looking at nautilus documentation larping like I will just to spite you
Why is GNOME the default DE for so many distros? Literally every single part of it is broken. It's not that that there are better alternatives, it's that almost EVERY alternative is better.
Because it's stable and polished.
Because it's was the only freesoftware DE. KDE was proprietary. So basically it has stayed the standard. Gnome is also more stable than any DE. and it is more up to date and heavily maintained.
KDE was proprietary in the fricking 90s. Why are developers using a situation from 30 years ago to justify their current choices?
homie, linux tards use 50 years old proprietary mainframe research OS (unix) to justify the course of their actions nowadays

>implying IQfy has ever implemented a feature
it's over for gn0mecels

1 day.
Of course, I've only ever made 1 program and I guess it only has three features -- the installer, program (which does one thing), and the uninstaller.
that's three more features than gnome
if you care about a feature you should code it yourself or pay somone to do it
or just use something that already has it
Never understood why they won't just implement this basic functionality
Why won't you just implement this basic functionality?
Why are you pretending that this is some Herculean task that no one is capable of doing? Several other toolkits/DEs have this feature, so clearly it isn't impossible to implement.
Then why don't you copy the code from those toolkits?
Then why do you care?
the logo for this autist circlejerk project is a foot

there have been patches that did but they never accepted them

i remember spending 18 hours in a row just to emulate hashmaps in bash
A whole human lifespan from craddle to adulthood oof

OH MY FRICKING GOD IT TAKES FIVE FRICKING SECONDS TO SWITCH TO THE QT/PLASMA FILE PICKER YOU NOOBS

QUIT TYPING THIS BULLSHIT ON IQfy AND IMPLEMENT THE FRICKING FEATURE ALREADY
Respect the based and autistic GNOME developer. It is a superior OS and the only reason you're assmad about missing features is due to your penis size
Get out of here Bassi.
you can fix and learn about gtk in a week but the devs won't accept a patch its shit on purpose.
Indefinitely, because I closed it as "won't do". Frick users.
Does export GTK_USE_PORTAL=1 firefox not work anymore?
It does work
The Genome project is basically complete
Thank you all for your service

OH LOOK IT IS THIS gayOT !
This was explained to you. Literally no one uses file pickers.
