The problem here is overloaded notation. We expect '=' to mean a particular thing and 99% of the time, it does mean that. Here we have an example of the 1% of the time that it doesn't which leads to needless confusion. Would it have been so hard to come up with some other symbols to mean 'By way of whatever, this value is assigned uniquely to this sum'?
